STEERING COLUMN

Firstly I must record my thanks to those members of the Council who stood down at the recent AGM.

Andrew Stavordale has served for a period of 12 years as Secretary, Treasurer and recently as a member without Portfolio. Steve Wells has served for the past 3 years as National Rally Liaison Officer and Caroline Smith has served for the past 5 years as Company Secretary. Although they have retired from the Council all three are still very much involved with the Club and Competition Scene and we look forward to seeing them at events. All three have done sterling work for the Association and for this I sincerely thank them personally and on behalf of the Council and the membership.

We are grateful to NFU Mutual for presenting the A.R.C. with a perpetual Trophy to be awarded at our annual National Rally to the first Lady Driver in the Competitive Safari.

Southern Rover Owners Club has made a firm offer to host the 2005 National Rally. The venue for the event is Copford Farm, Horam, near Heathfield in East Sussex. This offer was accepted with thanks by the ARC Council and membership at the recent AGM.

I look forward to seeing you at this year’s National Rally in Derbyshire.

Denis Bourne

A.R.C. Chairman

A.R.C. INTERNATIONAL RALLY 2004 May 28th to June 1st 2004

Peak and Dukeries Land Rover Club is progressing well with preparations for the rally. Entries are now coming in quickly, 180 entries in the RTV trial - 240 max and so nearing full entry, CCV 140 (240 max) Comp now 65 (120 max). SUPERWINCH are confirmed as Winch Recovery Sponsors and they have very kindly agreed to offer a SUPERWINCH as the prize for the team winning the winch recovery event. The competition area is the site of former mining activity and should present a fair challenge to everyone as the ground is not expected to alter much during the course of each event.

Confirmations of bookings are currently going out and all members are reminded that the closing date for entries is 28th April 2004, this was omitted from early entry forms. Although there is plenty of room for those wishing to camp and caravan on site, any competitive event entries received after this date will be placed initially on a reserve list and entry to events cannot be guaranteed. So, if you are thinking of entering, then you should send in your entry as soon as possible to reach the organisers before 28th April. More details of the site, the event, contacts, trade stands and entry forms can be found at Error! Bookmark not defined..

A follow on rally is to be organised in the local area and more information on this will be put onto the rally web site as soon as details are confirmed.

GRAHAM MATTHEWS

Graham Matthews

1963-13/3/2004

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you for the sudden death of Graham on Saturday 13th March 2004.

Graham had been a member of Lincolnshire Land Rover Club for 16 ½ years and had been chief marshal for 16. During that period he had missed less than 10 events that the club had held (around 30 a year), acting as club steward for the last 8 years. He had been our chairman for 2 years and had stood in as acting secretary on more than one occasion when the position had fallen unexpectedly vacant.

He had officiated at every ARC National RTV and CCVT since 1989 as either a marshal or group leader and could always be recognised with his flat cap, pen behind his ear, fag in mouth, portly figure and badly fitting trousers. He had managed to get past the bunting for the comp to assist with the timekeeping at most of Nationals when he hadn’t been asked to help. He normally attended Eckington and the Majors and marshalled there as well.

He tried his hand at RTVing about 13 years ago but decided after 2 sections that it wasn’t for him and spent the rest of the day marshalling.

As well as our club chief marshal he was membership sec, newsletter editor and a charity fundraiser for his local sports and social club and had until recently been a parish councillor and helped run the youth club.

Graham was no saint and was fond of a drink, so we ask that when next the occasion arises, you raise you glass in memory of the staunch supporter of ARC and CCVT in particular, Graham Matthews.

LLRC Chairman.

A.R.C. AGM - CHANGES TO A.R.C. COUNCIL AND SCRUTINEERING AND OFF ROAD COMMITTEE

Latest from NFU Mutual

Stay safe in the snow and the sun

IT will be several months before the final tally of accidents in this ski season is announced. But last year's figures from the French Mountain Rescue Service show a worrying trend. In the 2002-2003 season there were 51,677 rescue operations on French slopes alone, a 12 per cent increase on the previous year. And while ski trips are notoriously accident-prone there are no guarantees that any other holiday will be incident-free either.

A lost suitcase on a summer break can cost hundreds of pounds to replace, for example. Falling ill while overseas can trigger high medical or hospital bills. Being in an accident can cost even more if someone else says you were responsible and decides to sue you for damages.

It all makes it vitally important to travel with the right form of insurance. But how should holidaymakers pick the right policy?

The first thing is not to be rushed into buying a policy at the last minute when you book a break at a travel agent or through a holiday brochure. Holiday firms tend to be keen to sell their own-label travel cover – but they can't refuse to sell a holiday if you would rather buy your insurance elsewhere. Fortunately getting a decent policy from a different provider is simple. It will probably pay to pick an insurance company you know and trust.

Make sure the policy you choose offers a decent level of cover for medical expenses and repatriation costs - the Foreign & Commonwealth Office says it should be for a minimum of £1 million if you are travelling to Europe and £2 million for world-wide trips. NFU Mutual, for example, offers up to £2.5 million of medical cover on its policies.

Check your baggage will be covered if it is lost altogether, and that you will get some help buying clothes to wear if you go to one destination and your suitcase somehow ends up in another.

Make sure you have legal cover in case you are accused of being liable for the injury or death of another person, for example. This type of cover is known in the insurance trade as personal liability cover and a decent policy should offer at least £2 million.

Then look at some valuable extra benefits. A good policy will ensure you don't lose out if you have to cancel a holiday at the last minute after a family member or work colleague gets ill or dies. It will also give some compensation if your transport plans are delayed for more than, say, 12 hours. You may even be able to claim if certain unforeseen events such as a car breakdown prevent you from reaching your departure point in time for your flight, boat or train.

If you plan to take several holidays a year then an annual plan could be more useful than a selection of individual policies. NFU Mutual offers annual cover as an extension to its Premier Home Policy, for example, so customers can take as many ordinary holidays as they like each year, up to a total of either 60 or 90 days, without having to pay an extra premium each time.

Finally, make sure your insurer has the back up to help out if you do need to make a claim. A good policy should offer 24-hour help-lines to English-speaking staff, so you can get advice whenever you need it, wherever you are in the world. If, like NFU Mutual, it also has local offices around the country you have a good point of contact for information and help both before and after a trip as well.

So don't wait till you head to a travel agent before thinking about insurance. And don't risk going abroad on either a skiing or a sunshine holiday without a policy you trust.
