R.E.A.D. (Read, Enjoy, and Discover)

Independent Reading: Language Arts 2013-2014

  • Students must choose books that are a minimum book level of 5 and a minimum of 125 pages. Levels can be found on the label at the bottom of the spine of MMS library books. See teacher for books that are not labeled, or check this website for the reading level:
  • Students will read two novels each quarter. One novel will be of the students own choosing; the other novel for the quarter will be a genre selected by the teacher or an assigned novel. These will be posted on the homework calendar each time with the assigned activities.
  • Upon completion of the novel, students must submit the following two activities by the due dates listed below.

Activity 1 … Create a 20 question, multiple choice test. Each question must have four answer choices with the correct answer highlighted. The number of test questions may be reduced by two for every book level over the required level five. For example, 20 questions for a level 5 book, 18 questions for a level 6 book, 16 questions for a level 7 book, 14 questions for a level 8 book, 12 questions for a level 9 or above book. Tests may not have fewer than 12 questions. Please make sure that your questions are higher level questions.

AND

Activity 2 … Students will complete a project/ presentation assigned by the teacher for the book they read.

  • The scores for the activities will be averaged together for a R.E.A.D. test score for each quarter.

Check-list for Creating a R.E.A.D. Test

  • Head the paper with the MLA format.
  • Center the title of the novel and the author.
  • Level of the book under the author’s name
  • TYPE or write in INK .
  • All questions must be in a multiple choice format with four possible answers. (See examples of question stems)
  • Highlight the correct answer.
