Allegory: a story, painting etc in which the events and characters represent ideas or teach a moral lesson

Allusion: a reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature.
Analogy: comparison of two pairs which have the same relationship (like a long simile/metaphor)
Anaphora/Repetition: Where a specific word, phrase, or structure is repeated several times to emphasize a particular idea.
Apostrophe: when the speaker addressed a nonliving object, idea, or person
Assonance: (similar to alliteration) repeating vowel sounds Ex: the Soul selects her own Society
Cacophony: a loud unpleasant mixture of sounds Opposite of euphony.
Cliché: overused expression or idea
Connotation an association that comes along with a particular word. a quality or an idea that a word makes you think of that is more than its basic meaning
Denotation: dictionary definition; the exact meaning of a word, without the feelings or suggestions that the word may imply. It is the opposite of “connotation
Dialect: a form of a language which is spoken only in one area, with words or grammar that are slightly different from other forms of the same language
Dialogue: a conversation in a book, play, or film
Euphony: soothing pleasant sounds. Opposite of cacophony.
Foreshadowing: Where future events in a story, or perhaps the outcome, are suggested/hinted by the author before they happen
Homily: a speech given as part of a Christian church ceremony
Hyperbole: Extreme exaggeration
Idiom: a group of words that has a special meaning that is different from the ordinary meaning of each separate word. For example, 'under the weather' is an idiom meaning 'ill'.
Imagery: the use of words or pictures to describe ideas or actions in poems, books, films etc
Irony: a situation that is unusual or amusing because something strange happens, or the opposite of what is expected happens or is true; when you use words that are the opposite of what you really mean
Juxtaposition: to put things together, especially things that are not normally together, in order to compare them or to make something new; n literature, it's when one theme or idea or person or whatever is paralleled to another.
Mood: Overall feeling of the story, poem, etc
Motif: A dominant theme or central idea.
Onomatopoeia: a word that imitates the sound it represents. Example:splash, wow, gush, kerplunk Oxymoron: putting two contradictory/opposite words together. Ex:hot ice, cold fire, jumbo shrimp
Paradox/antithesis: a statement that seems impossible because it contains two opposing ideas that are both true; reveals a kind of truth which at first seems contradictory. Two opposing ideas
Parody: a piece of writing, music etc or an action that copies someone or something in an amusing way
Parallel Structure: Parallel structure is the term writers use to describe similar ideas expressed in similar ways. Easy example: The sentence "I like running, fishing, and to ski" lacks parallel structure. The similar ideas are running, fishing, and to ski, the three things you like to do. A more graceful and readable way to write them is to use parallel structure: "I like running, fishing, and skiing."
Personification: giving human qualities to animals or objects
Point of View: The identity of the narrative voice; the person or entity through whom the reader experiences the story. May be third-person (no narrator; abstract narrative voice, omniscient or limited) or first-person (narrated by a character in the story or a direct observer).
Prose: written language in its usual form, as opposed to poetry
Protagonist: main character
Pun: an amusing use of a word or phrase that has two meanings, or of words that have the same sound but different meanings
Simile: comparison of two unlike things using like or as
Stanza: a group of lines in a repeated pattern forming part of a poem (like a paragraph for a poem)
Symbol: a picture or shape that has a particular meaning or represents a particular organization or idea
Theme: the main subject or idea in a piece of writing, speech, film etc; is the general idea or insight about life that a writer wishes to express
Tone: the attitude a writer takes towards a subject or character
