Welcome to Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust

About Us

We aim to provide safe, clean and personal care for patients.

We are a large and busy University Teaching Hospital and care for an average OF 320,000 PEOPLE A YEAR.

We provide a range of medical, surgical, maternity and emergency service to the people of Salford. We also offer specialist care to people from all over the UK who need expert help with brain, neuroscience, kidney, bone, intestine or skin conditions.

Becoming a Foundation trust is an extremely exciting development. We still work to national standards but now have greater freedom to work more closely with patients, carers and members of the local community to design and develop services that meet the needs of the people who use our hospital.

We work closely with the Universities of Manchester and Salford to train hundreds of new doctors, nurses, midwives and other health professionals every year.

On an average day, we:

  • See 1,000 outpatients
  • Treat 192-250 patients in Accident and Emergency
  • Care for 840 inpatients
  • Treat 74 patients on a day case basis
  • Perform 622 radiology examinations
  • Dispense 1,240 prescriptions containing over 99,000 doses of

medicine

The Foundation Programme at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust

Through the Foundation Programme at Salford Royal, we aim to give you the knowledge and skills to help you become the best doctor you can be.

Our Hospital offers excellent educational and clinical experience for Foundation Doctors, it is modern well equipped and a friendly place to work and the clinical staffs have a keen interest in the teaching and welfare of junior doctors.

There is a brand new education centre and library at Salford Royal staffed during normal working hours. The library is well supplied with both electronic and paper resources and is soon to be accessible 24 hours a day 7 days a week. There is also a doctor’s mess.

We have a foundation tutor for each year, a foundation programme lead tutor, and a postgraduate clinical tutor at SalfordRoyalHospital. We also have an education Manager and a team of administrators in the education centre. There are also Junior Doctors committee meetings/foundation forum meetings held regularly to discuss any issues within Foundation Training. We also have an occupational health department on site to deal with pre-employment health screening (proof of vaccination/immunisation status) and are available for advice/support/treatment for occupational related health matters.

All Foundation Doctors will attend shadowing lectures and an induction; there is also regular weekly bleep free teaching sessions. In addition each department has clinical lunchtime meetings/teaching sessions, Postgraduate education also have Friday lunchtime Grand Rounds. The foundation tutors serve as mentors to their Foundation Doctors all of whom are assigned a clinical supervisor in each specialty.

Students that are assigned to Foundation Posts at SalfordRoyalHospital will complete a period of shadowing usually with their ‘future team’ wherever possible.

SalfordRoyalHospital is undertaking a massive redevelopment project, to greatly improve the environment for patients, visitors and staff. Unfortunately due to this redevelopment we currently have no staff accommodation and there are no plans for new accommodation in the future.

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust

Hospital location

Salford Royal is ideally located next to the M602 meaning it is easily accessible from all parts of the North West.

The adjoining motorway network means that the hospital is just a short car journey from many parts of the North West. For example, it is approximately 16 miles from Warrington, 29 miles from Northwich, 32 miles from Liverpool and 34 miles from Blackburn.

If you are travelling to the hospital on the M602 into Manchester, exit at junction 2 and turn onto Eccles Old Road. Then turn right onto Stott Lane at the traffic lights. Similarly, from the M60, you can join the M602 and follow the directions above.

The map below shows its geographical proximity to many places:

Salford

Salford is a city constantly changing and moving into an exciting future as a thriving cultural, economic and residential location. From urban buzz to greenbelt tranquility, Salford is building on the mixture of its waterfront, urban and countryside environments to create places where people want to live, work, invest and visit.

Salford's closeness to Manchester city centre makes it an important part of the economy and culture that is driving England's North West forward. Salford and Manchester enjoy a unique situation: their connection creates a wealth of opportunities ranging from the potential for business relocation and development to establishing Salford's waterways and watersides as key regional and national visitor attractions and turning the city into a residential area of choice within Greater Manchester.
