Dr. Kara Poe Alexander received a Baylor University Research Grant in the amount of $2,570 for a research study entitled, "Multimodality and Technical Writing: The Case of Instructions."

The most recent issue of The Willa Cather Newsletter and Review(Winter 2008) is a special issue on Cather and material culture, with a keynote essay by Janis Stout, photographs of artifacts in the Cather Foundation's collection, and brief commentsfrom twenty-four scholars and readers on images of the Turkish Lady from O, Pioneers!,the "slave girl" cardholder from A Lost Lady, Cather's girlhood wallpaper, her baby cup, her hand brace, her pocket watch, her ubiquitous green jacket. Among the five comments concerning the cardholder is one by Nancy Chinn.

Dr. William V. Davis’ has been selected as President of The Texas Institute of Letters.

Dr. William V. Davis gave a reading of his poetry in Santa Cruz, California, February 15th.

Dr. William V. Davis gave a lecture on Robinson Jeffers and R. S. Thomas at the 14th Annual Robinson Jeffers Association Conference held at Cabrillo College in California, February 15-17th.

As President of the Texas Institute of Letters, Dr. William V. Davis spoke at the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Dobie Paisano Fellowship Program—co-sponsored by the Texas Institute of Letters and the University of Texas. The celebration was held at the Dobie ranch near Austin and many of the former Fellows were in attendance. The other speakers were Michael Adams, Directory of the Dobie Paisano Program, Steven W. Leslie, Executive Vice-President and Provost of U T, and Victoria Rodriguez, Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies at U T.

Dr. Martha Kalnin Diede, Associate Professor of English at Northwest University (Seattle, WA), has published Shakespeare's Knowledgeable Body (New York: Peter Lang Publishing, 2008) 176 pp. Dr. Diede received her M.A. and Ph.D. (2002) from the Baylor Department of English. Her recent book,a progressive analysis of the bodypolitic motif in Richard II, 1 and 2 Henry IV, Hamlet, and Antony and Cleopatra,grew out of her dissertation directed by Dr. Maurice Hunt.

Dr. Richard Russell has been invited to contribute an 8,000 word essayentitled, “Belfast Poets: Michael Longley, Derek Mahon, Medbh McGuckian,” for the forthcoming Companion to Irish Literature, edited byJulia Wright, to be published by Blackwell in 2010.

Dr. Russell chaired the session on Contemporary Irish Poetry and gave a paper for that session entitled "Transcending Polarities: Michael Longley's Exotic Musical Identities in 'Words for Jazz Perhaps'" at the Southern Regional Meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies in Savannah, Georgia, which was held March 6-8.

Dr. Richard Russell has been chosen to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities

Instituteon W.B. Yeats,in Galway, Ireland, fromJuly 7-August 1, 2008, which will be led by eight major Yeats scholars and will cover Yeatsian biography; Yeats's mystical writings, especially A Vision; textual Yeats; and diverse critical approaches to Yeats.

Information has been received from Southern Methodist University concerning its position for a first-year writing Lecturer to begin August 2008. The teaching load is 4/4, and the successful candidate will participate in the shared responsibilities of the Program faculty, including reviewing disputed grades and making occasional presentation at Program workshops. CONFERENCES – CALLS FOR PAPERS

Information has been received from The Graduate Center and Brooklyn College of The City University of New York concerning its Latin Greek Institute for summer 2008. The basic programs in Latin and Greek will take place June 9-August 19, 2008. The deadline for applying to the basic programs is May 2, 2008. Information has been received from Oklahoma Baptist University concerning its Southwest Conference on Christianity and Literature taking place October 2-3, 2008. The topic of this year’s conference and call for papers is Christianity and the “Things of this World.” Abstracts consisting of 300-600 words (including your name, institutional affiliation, and contact information) may be sent as an attachment (.doc, .rtf, or .pdf) to no later than May 15, 2008. Information has been received from St. Francis College concerning its upcoming American Drama Conference to be held November 7-9, 2008. The conference invites papers on any aspect of American drama, playwrights, and theater. Of particular interest are discussions connecting playwrights to each other and to social, political, historical, and aesthetic issues. Papers are also welcomed on stagecraft, performance, and production history. Papers should not exceed 10 pages for a twenty minute presentation. The deadline for submissions is June 15, 2008. Echoes of the Aeolian Harp

Through the generosity of Mrs. Virginia B. Ball of Muncie, Indiana, an endowed series of lectures to be called the Beall-Russell Lectures in the Humanities has been created. This series honors the mother of Mrs. John Beall (the mother of Mrs. Ball) and Mrs. Lily Russell. From the Department of English, Professor Ann Miller and Dean Robert Collmer (ex officio) will serve on the planning committee.
