Math 7 Teacher: Mr. Gerry Zanoni

Rationale:There are 4 strands upon which the grade 7 Mathematics program is based. The following curriculum objectives will be achieved in each strand.

Numbers:

  • Students will develop number sense.

Patterns and Relations

  • Students will use patterns to describe the world and to solve problems.

Shape and Space

  • Students will describe and compare everyday phenomena, using either direct or indirect measurement.
  • Students will describe the characteristics of 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships among them.
  • Students will perform, analyze and create transformations.

Statistics and Probability

  • Students will collect, display and analyze data to make predictions about a population.
  • Students will use experimental or theoretical probability to represent and solve problems involving uncertainty.

In most cases, the results of a course are directly related to the amount of effort put forth on each and every day. I will put forth my best and expect that you will put forth your best effort. Reviewing the day’s notes and examples is expected every evening in addition to redoing questions and practicing assigned questions.

STUDENTS SHOULD DO A MINIMUM OF 10 - 30 MINUTES OF HOMEWORK IN MATHEMATICS five to six DAYS PER WEEK, yup, that means Friday and at least one day on the weekend. If no new questions are assigned for homework, students are to read old notes and review (and redo) previous questions. Extra help is available at lunch. Please ask me for help. I have set aside times to help.

Course Breakdown and Order:

Following is the list of chapters that will be studied. The number of classes spent on each chapter is relative to the value of that chapter in the entire course.

Chapter 3:Decimal Numbers*We are starting with Chapter 3*

Chapter 1:Number Relationships

Chapter 2:Fractions

Chapter 4:Percent

Chapter 5:Measurement

Chapter 6:Addition/Subtraction of Integers

Chapter 7:2-D Geometry

Chapter 8:Statistics

Chapter 9:Linear Relations and Linear Equations

Chapter 10:Probability

Chapter 11:Circle Graphs

Term Mark Breakdown:

Homework checks and in-class assignments: 15%

Quizzes (both in-class and takehome) 25%

Chapter tests 40%

Final 20%

Total 100%

Important Note:

Students receiving less than 60% will earn a re-write by doing an extra assignment. Uponsuccessful completion of the assignment and re-testing, the exam mark will be adjusted up to 60%.

Expectations:

You are expected to come to class prepared and on time. Having your texts, completed homework, necessary calculators, pencils and erasers is expected. Late entries will not be tolerated. If students continue to come to class late or unprepared, we will set up extra work time at lunch to work on math with the teacher.

It is expected that in the classroom, you exercise common sense and maturity. You are here to work, so do so and set a positive example.

You are to take ownership for your learning. If you do not understand something, please set up a time to discuss this with me. I will extend my time to those who are using their class time wisely and are putting in time doing homework. PLEASE do not wait until just before exams to ask for help.

Binders/notebooks will be necessary for Math class. Notes are to be taken in class and examples are to be written down in your notebooks. A rule of thumb for note taking success: if I take the time to write an example on the board (whether you have asked the question or not), you should write the notes in your notebooks with extra notes explaining the examples.

Classroom Management Rules:

If you miss class, you are fully responsible for finding out specifically what you missed from another student in the class and be prepared to participate in the next class, whether it be showing homework, writing a pop quiz or writing an exam. Homework or review is assigned EVERY DAY, so your text should already be at home. There is a homework spot on my whiteboard where all assignments are written. Have a friend check so you can do the homework.

You must submit all work to me neatly written and well labeled. Work that is not neat or not labeled will be rewritten.

Please purchase for your child a TI30 XIIS calculator.

It is easier for the students if they all have the same equipment. It helps with demonstrations, giving directions, assistance, and for when they write exams. Two is even a good idea, one for home and one for school. This is a $18 - $22 calculator and is worth the extra cost as it should get your child to grade 10.

Good Luck and Welcome to Math 7. I am looking forward to your success.
