Advisory Commission on Charter Schools

The State Board of Education (SBE) is currently seeking applications for appointment to serve on the Advisory Commission on Charter Schools.

The role of the ACCS is to support the SBE. The SBE has policy-making authority on a growing number of issues related to individual charter schools and the charter system as a whole. Under guidance, criteria, and direction provided by the SBE, the ACCS will review and advise on many of the charter related items coming to the SBE, such as nonclassroom-basedfunding determinations, and other assignments as requested, which might include review of charter appeals of renewal denials, due diligence on the development and oversight of California's federal charter schools grant requirements, and others.

ACCS Composition:
CaliforniaEducation Code Section 47634.2 (b) provides that the composition of the SBE's eight appointments shall include, but is not limited to, representatives from school district superintendents, charter schools, teachers, parents, members of the governing boards of school districts, county superintendents of schools, and others.The ninth member of the ACCS is an appointment by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
For the eight ACCS SBE appointed positions that will be open by May 2011, the SBE is conducting an open application process.

The SBEencourages applications from any highly qualified individuals who can bring any one or more of the six perspectives identified above as well as individuals from business, nonprofit, research, or other backgrounds that have strong knowledge of and interest in charter school policy and related federal and state education policy. Applications from current ACCS members are welcome.

Term of Office:

Terms are for two calendar years, and may be renewed by the SBE based upon participation and contribution, membership composition, a need to stagger terms, or other considerations.

Frequency of Meetings:

The ACCS generally meets every other month or six times a year.Depending upon workload, the SBE or California Department of Education (CDE) may call for additional meetings. The schedule of ACCS one-day meetings in Sacramento for 2011 is available at [Note: Invalid link removed.].

Travel, Lodging, and Other Expenses:

Committee members will be reimbursed for travel and per diem expenses related to Committee meetings only, at the same rate applicable for CDE staff. No reimbursement will be made for other activities.

Please note that the application form requests that applicants provide both a resume and two letters of recommendation. The SBE also requests that applicants provide a letter of one page or less addressing theirinterest and qualifications in serving on the ACCS.

All applications meeting the deadline requirements will be considered by the two SBE charter liaisons, Trish Williams and Yvonne Chan, and SBE and CDE staff.

Finalist candidates will be asked to participate in a 15-minute telephone interview, tentatively planned for the afternoon of Tuesday, May 10, 2011, but the process and date may be extended at SBE discretion.
