2017/18 Application

Background and Aim

Established in 1998 (known then as The Derry~Londonderry Cycling Forum), the Active and Sustainable Travel Forum’s mission statement has been broadened to include the new Council area and the North West as well as reference to active travel: “To develop, promote and maintain active and sustainable transport opportunities within the Derry-Strabane Council and North West area for the purposes of physical, social and economic gain”

The new name and mission statement is in keeping with the vision, aims and objectives of the Transport and Infrastructure group within the Community Plan for the Council area: “We will have a more integrated, sustainable and accessible transport system, which maximises growth, social inclusion and quality of life.”

Through the Active & Sustainable Travel Forum’s Promotions and Business Opportunities sub-group, the Council will aim to promotea comprehensive range of public and private sector walking and cycling events to four main audiences across the Council area and North West region seeking to spread the sustainability message as widely as possible:

Schoolsto encourage children, staff and their parents to consider walking and cycling as an option for the journey to school;

Communitiesto encourage participation in walking and cycling events and training opportunitiesto local residents from a range of target groups (particularly those “non-traditional” or “harder to reach” groups in relation to cycling - e.g., women, people living with disability, senior citizens, etc.);

Employers to enlist employers’ support for the efforts of employees wishing towalk, cycle

Commutersor use combination journeys(e.g., car + walk/car + bike) to work and to encourage commuters to choose walking or cycling for the journey to work;

Visitorsto offer walking and cycling events and opportunities for visitors (both domestic and international) as a unique way to explore and experience the Council area and North West region.

Promotional funding

Derry-Strabane Council will provide funding to local walking & cycling clubs, schools, community groups and employers to arrange events and trainings that will support the promotion of active travel (walking and cycling) to its main audiences and also where possible highlight the supporting aims of its partner bodies. Events should maximise participation by including the general public, a wide cross-section of schools, communities or a number of diverse workplaces.The Councilwould also encourage applicants to collaborate with each other both withinand/or without the Council area (e.g., with groups in other communities within the District or the Republic of Ireland).

Applying for funds

This application form will enable the Council to considerpromotional funding for an event or events from May 2017 to March 31 2018.

Funding will be allocated across two rounds of applications. Completed applications for the summer term must be submitted in hard copy or by e-mail by 4pm on31May 2017. Completed applications for the autumn/winter term must be submitted by 4pm on 15 September 2017.

An amount of up to £1000is being made availableto each applicant. Separate events/trainings may be planned within this limit. Multiple applications for separate events/trainings from same groups and organisations may also be made. Applications for funding exceeding this amount may still be considered but applicants should contact the Council in advance to discuss the need and justification.

It will be up to the applicant to obtain all necessary authorisations and approvals in advance of the event (e.g. from Council Safety Advisory Group, PSNI, TransportNI, respective landowners, etc.)if required.

Multiple events and/or a series of trainings taking place between 20 May 2017 and 31 March 2018 (minimum of 4 to take place) / Private individuals

Groups or organisations based outside the Derry City and Strabane District Council area
A one off / single event or training
Competitive events (e.g., races, skills competitions, etc.)

The Council reserves the right to withhold funding from any event which does not adequately and appropriately promotethe Council’s messages of cycling to the four main audiences listed above.

Payment of Funds

Funds will be payable after the event and on production of an itemised invoice submitted by an authorised officer of theorganisation along with any available supporting documentation (e.g. copies of invoices for items used) and on production of evidence that the event or events being supported have taken place, e.g. photographs of event and local media coverage.

Expenditure incurred, but not included in this application, will not be considered for funding.

Where match funding is being sought from other bodies in addition to this funding and where any co-funder(s) have asked for media exposure, please provide details of request/arrangement.

Joint marketing

If successful in your fundingapplication,the Counciland the PHA must be recognised for its support through the use of bannering at events. Council and PHAlogos should also be used on any marketing materials and recognition given in press releases and media coverage.
