General Background

The Outstanding Secondary Physical Education Program of the Year (POY) Award recognizes physical education programs of excellence through a process of self-assessment by the school physical education staff. Therefore, all teachers are to be included in the application process.

Application Requirements:

There are five parts you will need to include when compiling your application:

Program Description

Include a brief narrative describing the uniqueness of your program, description of the school and community and any general information that will help the reviewers understand the ‘story’ you have told in your application packet.

Explanation of Criterion

Describe how each element listed below is implemented in your program:

  1. Minimum Instructional Minutes:
  2. Each middle/high school student receives a minimum of 400 minutes of physical education instruction every 10 school days.
  3. Course Offerings
  4. Course description is provided for each class offered.
  5. List of all physical education exemptionsis made available to students.
  6. Students who are exempted from two years of physical education (because they passed 5 of 6 HFZ’s) in grades 10, 11, or 12 are offered a variety of physical education elective courses.
  7. Teacher Qualifications:
  8. All who teach physical education have a current California state license/certificate to teach physical education in California.
  9. Professional Development
  10. All physical education teachers have participated in at least one physical education-related professional development activity in the past 12 months.
  11. Professional Involvement
  12. At least one physical education teacher is a current member of CAHPERD or AAHPERD.

  1. Facility
  2. There is an assigned location for all physical education classes that allows for safe movement by all students.
  3. Equipment
  4. There is sufficient equipment to facilitate learning and practice time for all students in each class period using multiple learning stations and a variety of equipment and skills.
  5. Program Mission Statement
  6. The physical education department has a mission statement.
  7. Curriculum
  8. The curriculum is based on the Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools.
  9. All physical education teachers use a written sequential and progressive curriculum that includes skills and concepts directly linked to the five overarching CA middle school standards or three overarching CA high school standards.
  10. High school courses provide students with instruction in each of the eight content areas required by California Education Code.
  11. The physical education curriculum is reviewed and revised by teachers on a regular basis.
  12. The physical education department has a yearly plan that includes units of study, the number of class periods per unit and is aligned with the physical education curriculum.
  13. Instructional Practices
  14. Each teacher develops and uses written unit plans that are aligned with the department’s yearly plan.
  15. Each teacher establishes and implements appropriate class management procedures and strategies to maximize instructional time as well as students’ emotional and physical safety.
  16. Student Assessment and Evaluation
  17. All teachers regularly assess students on achievement of lesson objectives related to knowledge and performance of motor skills, social and psychological concepts, and health-related concepts.
  18. Formative assessments are used routinely to provide critical information/feedback to the teacher and students.
  19. All physical education teachers use a written grading plan that reflects student achievement of essential standards-based physical education content.
  20. “Compliance” issues (non-suits/tardies, etc.) are included in students’ citizenship/effort grade and are not part of students’ academic grade.
  21. Communication and Coordination
  22. Physical education teachers communicate with other members of the department on a regular basis.
  23. Parent Communication
  24. All parents receive written progress reports regarding student achievement at least once per grading period.
  25. Including Students with Disabilities
  26. All teachers have a plan for appropriate instruction that enables individuals with disabilities to practice skills and engage in physical activity in the least restrictive manner.
  27. Program Improvement/Evaluation
  28. The physical education staff actively solicits student feedback about the physical education program through informal discussion or formal survey.

Documentation of Criteria

Include examples to show how your program meets the criteria. For example, school forms and written policies, course syllabi, plans, processes, procedures, charts, tables, inventory of equipment, map of physical education facilities, sample lesson plans, grade reports (omit student names), assessments, pictures, worksheets, and/or any other items pertaining to elements found in the criteria and as implemented in your program.

Letters of recommendation

  • A minimum of 2 and maximum of 3 letters should be included.
  • Letters should be directly related to the criteria listed above.
  • Include at least one letter from the principal, a colleague and a parent.

Application Directions

  • Type using a 12-point font.
  • Submit the application electronically to Paige Metz, , by May 1, 2017.
  • Upon receipt of the application, the applicant will be contacted to schedule a site visitation by the selection committee.
  • Evidence from both the written application and site visitation will be used to determine award selection.

Note: Unit award recipients will be encouraged to apply for the CAHPERD state award the following school year. State applications are due November 1.
