Job Purpose:

To work as part of a team delivering high quality Pest Control Services to customers in the public and private sectors
Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

To work as part of a team delivering high quality Pest Control and associated services to residential, commercial and industrial premises, including the undertaking of pest control treatments as directed.
To undertake work on projects and initiatives in groups or individually, within or outside the remit of the team, to work closely with other Council units, in order to assist the Unit or the Council in meeting its objectives.
To undertake surveys to determine the type and extent of infestation, and the constructional features of the infested premises, and to recommend appropriate and effective treatment, including the type of pesticide and method of application, or other action.
To take all necessary and prescribed measures to protect the environment, your own health and safety and the health and safety of others, and the property and possessions of customers, when undertaking operational activities.
To collect payments for services from customers, issue receipts and process cash receipts in accordance with Unit procedures and financial regulations.
To drive and maintain in a clean condition a fleet vehicle, and to use the vehicle in accordance with current requirements, both legal and procedural.
To operate and maintain all pest control equipment necessary for the provision of the service, including the safe use of ladders.
To supervise and monitor the work of contractors and contract staff as required.
To assist in the organisation, supervision and execution of sewer baiting programmes and block control treatments as required.
To assist in the organisation, and execution of pigeon proofing measures, including the cleansing and removing of pigeon matter as and when required.
To undertake relevant administrative duties and to maintain records accurately and in the required form, including entry of data onto computer systems as appropriate, and to provide written reports for senior officers on request.
To deal sympathetically and courteously with customers and members of the public, and to give advice regarding safety precautions and other practical steps for the prevention and control of infestation.
To maintain personal knowledge and expertise, including relevant legislation in the field of Pest Control, and to undertake training and development activities as required.
To attend meetings of Council officers, tenants’ groups and other bodies relating to the work of the service.
To carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade and purpose of the job and the objectives of the Unit and the Council, including the performance of duties outside normal working hours where necessary.
* For the purpose of this Job Description ‘Treatment’ includes the preparation and application of pesticides or the undertaking of pest-proofing, in accordance with standard procedure or written specification, and the carrying out of any necessary follow-up survey and monitoring works.

Job Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Knowledge and Qualifications:
1.  Knowledge of the principles of Occupational Health and Safety as they apply to the job.
2.  The postholder must either hold a Royal Society for the Promotion of Health Certificate in Pest Control, a BPCA Diploma in Pest Control part 1 or Level 2 RSPH/BPCA or equivalent qualification
Experience:
3.  Recent practical experiences of undertaking safe, effective Pest Control treatments and providing pest proofing measures for rats, mice and pigeons in residential, commercial and environmental settings
Skills and Abilities:
4.  Meet the physical demands of the job, including:
¨  wearing protective clothing, incl. respirators.
¨  climbing and carrying ladders, climbing scaffolding.
¨  carrying and operating mechanical and electrical equipment safely.
¨  scaling heights and descending depths.
¨  entering confined and hot or cold spaces (mostly loft spaces)
5.  Manage a demanding workload within required time scales and working flexibly to meet other targets and standards, all within Brent’s Performance Management system.
6.  Manage identification of pests and provision of accurate and practical advice on their control.
7.  Determine the most effective method of pest treatment and control.
8.  Safely use and maintain pest control equipment.
9.  Maintain accurate records, either in written format or using electronic equipment. To draft clear, concise and understandable written reports where required
10.  Safely and honestly handle and keep payments made, including the ability to count money paid and determine the correct change.
11.  Communicate effectively, sensitively and considerately with customers from different social, ethnic and professional backgrounds, service users, colleagues and outside agencies.
12.  Follow written and verbal work standards, treatment methods, work guidelines procedures and safety requirements.
13.  Demonstrate a high degree of motivation and an eagerness to learn and utilise new skills and knowledge and a willingness to refresh these.
14.  Work as an effective and co-operative team member to ensure that the team and Unit achieve its objectives.
15.  Work flexibly to meet the needs of the service and its users, including the performance of duties outside normal working hours where required, and respond effectively to changing circumstances and emergency situations.
16.  Use and update computerised systems, including the internet, databases, word processors, and spreadsheets.
17.  Drive a light goods vehicle with either automatic or manual gears (candidates must possess a full and valid UK driving licence)
