INFORMATION TO POTENTIAL APPLICANTS TO THE
Ph.D. PROGRAM IN PSYCHOLOGY

  1. For acceptance to the Ph.D. program, the applicant must have the equivalent of a one year Master Degree with psychology as the major subject.
  1. Deadlines for application occur at least annually, in the spring semester with application deadline 1 May, but may also occur in the fall semester with application deadline 1 December.
  1. Application is done via the recruiting system Reachmee. The application web-link is found in the advertisement at the university homepage:
  1. Several documents must be appended to the application form (see further info below), among which are as follows:

A financial plancovering 4 years of full-time studies or 8 years of part-time studies

A project plan that describes the research area

A certificate(see below for template) signed by a department supervisor willing to supervise the applicant upon acceptance into the program. As applicant, you must contact a presumptive supervisor yourself. The supervisor must be either an Associate or a Full Professor. Applications will not be processed without these documents.

  1. An external supervisor (not employed at Stockholm University) cannot be the main supervisor, but can, however, be a secondary supervisor. External supervisors are not paid for their supervision.
  1. All applications are first scrutinized by a committee of at least two supervisors, who read and rank the applications.
  1. Then, at the research faculty meeting, the applications are considered. This is based on the applicants' suitability for the Ph.D. education.
  1. The applicants who are accepted into the program are guaranteed a doctorate student employment (if this claim has been made in the application form). If granted a doctorate student position, the Ph.D. student must maintain a normal study pace, completing at least 60 points each yeargiven full time studies.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE Ph.D. APPLICATION FORM

The following numbered points correspond to the number points on the application form.

  1. For Item 1, the major and minor subjects, grade-point average or the equivalent, and final grades of each of the Bachelor and/or Master Degrees, are to be given; attach with your application certified copies of each of the diplomas. In certain cases where the diploma has not yet been received, but the course work has been completed, certification of completion must be attached. Other course grades that are not included in the degrees should also be given, and copies of the undergraduate and/or graduate theses should also be attached.

Applicants who have not attended Psychology I, II, or III at Stockholm’s University need to attach course descriptions of those courses included in the psychology degrees. If possible, include a description of course literature, as well. This aids in determining if the applicant has fulfilled the course requirements for acceptance into the Ph.D. program. If certain course requirements have not been fulfilled, the applicant will be notified as to which courses need to be completed.

  1. For Item 2, the applicant should attach written material to which can be referred as qualification and merit for acceptance into the Ph.D. program. Such material includes, but is not restricted to, published articles, undergraduate/graduate theses, and research reports; acceptance into the program is in large part based upon this material.

Note: Only one written composition (e.g., thesis or article) will be evaluated by the reviewers. The application must make clear which composition that is selected out for review. If a composition is included on which the applicant is not the sole author, the applicant should specify his/her own role as well as the role of co-authors for this composition. The applicant is also to motivate why this particular composition has been selected. Moreover, a letter (or separate letters for each co-author) describing the role of the applicant for that composition is to be signed by the co-authors and appended to the application.

  1. Item 3 is for the applicant to present previous work experience, services, and employment that is seen as appropriate qualifications for acceptance into the program. If needed, continue on a separate page.
  1. The Financial Plan for the applicant should be presented for Item 4.
  1. The Financial Plan must cover 4 years of full-time studies or 8 years of part-time studies. A 2 (full-time) or 4 (part-time) year financial plan is required for applicants planning to complete a licentiate degree. Note that a financial plan must always be included in the application.
  1. The Faculty of Social Sciences has decided (2008-06-05) which sources of financing are accepted. In addition to position as a doctoral student and postgraduate grants, study support and other grants are accepted. Moreover, employment with an external employer who certifies that the doctoral student is allowed to follow the doctoral programme at least at 50% of full time is accepted. In this case, a written confirmation from the employer specifying for how long and to what extent the student can follow the program should be available before the student can be accepted to the program.
  1. The Financial Plan must contain the following information:

When the Ph.D. degree is planned to be completed

How are the studies to be financed on a year by year basis

Potential financing the department can contribute, in applicable cases

Specified potential work for the department (such as teaching and/or administration)

  1. Item 5 is where the applicant presents the Research Plan. In an attachment, the applicant should outline the coming years of research for the applicant’s dissertation. This outline is not binding; the plan can and should be revised during the supervising and research process. The outline should be realistic in all aspects, with exception of the financial plan.

The Research Plan should be a maximum of 8 pages, written in Times New Roman font, size 12 with single spacing.

The Research Plan should at least consist of the following:

  1. Purpose and Hypothesis

In this section the application committee should have a proper understanding of the applicant’s thought process concerning the dissertation. This includes the general thesis for the dissertation in its entirety, as well as the theses for the individual experiments/articles within the dissertation.

  1. Background

This section should describe the theoretical framework within which the applicant is planning the dissertation. This includes earlier research and experience or knowledge the applicant has within the field. In the Background, the applicant should describe in detail the hypotheses of the dissertation, so that the thought process behind the dissertation is clear.

  1. Method

This section is a description of the design of the individual experiments/articles that are planned with the dissertation in its entirety. This should include the following:

Choice, measuring, and operationalization of variables

Choice of population and sample of the experiments

Potential errors and how to adjust for these, if possible

Recruitment of participants

Method and Data analysis

Time table of the individual experiments and the dissertation in its entirety

  1. Item 6 is for the applicant to give references to individuals who can be contacted by the application committee, if so needed. The names, addresses, and appropriate telephone numbers should be given.
  1. For Item 7, the applicant may include other comments, information, and merits that can be relevant for the application; for example, honor awards, honor recognition, and outstanding grades. If any of the above have been awarded from a Department outside the Department of Psychology, SU, then the applicant must attach a certified copy of the transcript.
  1. Your application must be submitted electronically (see the job advertisement for the application web link) as one PDF-file and the documents/attachments are to be ordered according to points 1-7, above. Note that copies must be certified prior to scanning. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
