Education Outreach Worker

Christ Church Clapham SW8 2QJ

Who we are

Christ Church Clapham is an historic church located between Vauxhall, Stockwell and Clapham. This is an area of diversity with residents from many different African heritages, as well as from the Caribbean, India and Bangladesh, China and Vietnam, and southern Europe.

The new Centre

Our new Education Centre is an innovative outreach project, focusing on resettlement experiences of different groups. The building of the Centre and its first phase running costs have been funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. The Centre builds on Christ Church’s tradition of engagement and social mission in the local community.

Its purpose is to help the local community – children, youth and adults of all ages –to explore its various resettlement heritages, to help build community inclusion, pride and sense of belonging. This includes addressing the impact on resettlement experiences on racism, other discrimination, poverty, stigma and isolation. The Centre has its physical base at the west end of our beautiful Victorian building, where there is space for displays and exhibits.

The role

The successful candidate will be the Centre’s first leader and will develop and conduct its education, outreach and community engagement activities.

These will include: sessions in schools, colleges and through the U3A; outreach work with the local community groups; hosting groups and individuals visiting the Centre; developing and training a volunteer group; developing educational resources linked to local history and heritage; liaising with existing and future funders; and working in collaboration with other relevant church-run and community projects.

This can build on our existing partnerships with schools, community groups and local residents. It will involve developing links with appropriate education, heritage and community leaders.

You will have the satisfaction of seeing the impact of the Centre first-hand, while having had a key role in designing and implementing it.

You will report to the Vicar of Christ Church.
