APPLICATION FOR A PPSA PORT HANDICAP 2017

INTRODUCTION PPSA Port Handicaps are calculated to be on a par the RYA’s National Handicap for Cruisers (NHC) scheme, but are fixed handicaps intended for use in one-off races etc where there is no opportunity for handicaps to evolve during a series as envisaged in the NHC scheme. In other words, a Port Handicap is our best estimate of what a boat’s NHC handicap would evolve into at the end of a long consistent race series which included a wide cross section of Plymouth boats racing in Plymouth waters under average Plymouth conditions. The formula used to calculate Port Handicaps is a variation of the “open-domain” Emsworth formula and takes into account hull and rig dimensions, and variations such as type of keel (fin, bulb, twin etc), overlap headsails, hi-tech sails, cruising chute, folding propeller etc. Additional Port Handicaps can be provided for “white sail” events. Port Handicaps are intended to be stable; they will not be adjusted unless strong evidence emerges that a particular handicap is producing “unfair” racing. Owners wishing to race under PPSA Port Handicap are invited to submit the data below to the PPSA Hon Handicapper, Tony Head, by email to or by post to 6 Osborne Villas, Stoke, PLYMOUTH PL3 4BS, tel 01752-550708. The data required should be easy enough to self-measure, or obtain from the boat’s documentation and on-line sources such as SAILBOATDATA.COM but if there any queries do not hesitate to contact the Port Handicapper.
