Organizational Requirements during the Course of Pathology

A. General conventions and work in the room for practicals

Before each practical class of anatomic pathology students are obliged:

  1. To take off their overcoats and bags in the cloakroom (both at the Blue Building and at the Old Pathology Department).
  1. Each student has to put on a white overcoat and to change shoes: these are personal belongings which each student must bring along every time; each student will receive another coat and rubber boots in the autopsy suite.
  1. We strongly recommend the students not to carry larger sums of money, jewelry or other valuable items than those necessary for everyday use; students are responsible for their personal belongings; we would recommend to carry all money and other personal belongings (such as Ids, licenses, mobile telephones etc.) with you for the time of your courses. Mobile telephones should be put into the quiet regime or switched off during the classes.
  1. Each student is going to work with one microscope for the whole year and will be responsible for the microscope; the responsibility will be confirmed by a signature.
Fun-loving scholars are forbidden to take microscopes to pieces. Students disrespecting this simple rule may be liable to fines or to reporting. If a student finds a microscope in a disorder at the beginning of the class he or she must refer the condition of the microscope to the teacher without delay.
  1. Similarly, every student is responsible for sets of histological slides. Same instructions as with microscopes are applicable to the histological slides.

B. The work at the autopsy tract brings an infectious hazard. To minimize the risk

of contracting an infectious disease, simple rules are necessary to follow:

  1. The entry to the autopsy room is allowed only to students who are changed into coats, masks, caps, and wear rubber boots especially used for this purpose.
  1. All these items are ready in the sanitary filter at the beginning of each class. At the end of each class, students will hang the coats on the rack and put the boots on the shelf. If the clothes become smudged they would be put aside at a designated area. The rubber boots are put on normal shoes which students wear throughout their classes and not on shoes worn outside the building.
  1. To be able to overhaul organs and tissues which were immersed in a fixative and are ready to use on trays, two or three students will put on surgical gloves.
  1. If there is any injury, the student affected has to consult the teacher and to handle the injury according to the common first aid rules. The teacher will consider further steps and will put the incident down in a book of injuries.
  1. When leaving the autopsy suite, each student will wash hands thoroughly with soap under running water and submerge the hands into a disinfection solution for about 30 seconds. It is recommended to wash hands again when back at the histology auditory.
  1. The practice and work in the autopsy tract is forbidden to pregnant women and to mothers of infants. If any of these facts become known or are known before the course of pathology started you are obliged to inform your teacher.
