You have signed up for AP Studio Art Photography for the upcoming school year. This course is designed for students who wish to pursue art in college or would like the challenge of college level assignments while still in high school.

ALL FILM MUST BE TURNED IN ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!

You are to complete 5 rolls of 36 exposure film over the summer. The film will be due the first day of school. Consequently, if you do not complete this film assignment, you will not pass the first semester, because much of the first semester will be spent working on this assignment. Below are 2 required assignments that must be included within your 5 rolls of film. The film must be 36 exposures, Kodak T Max 400. Any remaining film can be shot on a topic or topics of your choosing. You do not have to shoot on a single topic, but I am looking for well composed, thoughtful and unique images.

Assignment 1: (no more than 18 exposures or ½ roll of film)

Find a location or place to photograph at different times of the day, week, varying weather, varying lighting conditions, season changes etc. For example, an old barn photographed at sunrise, sunset, on a rainy day. You will need to photograph the same location 3 different times. It may be done on different rolls of film, but it is not required that you shoot an entire roll based on this location. After developing the film, you will be required to print 3 images that show change or variety of this same location. This will count as 1 project grade. Please remember that you should stand in the same place each time you return to photograph, and use the same focal length (zoom) so that the images look similar in composition. Please make the location somewhere that will be easy to return to at different times so that you can vary the photographs somehow. Again, this should not take up anymore than half a roll or approx 18 exposures total.

Here are examples of this assignment:

Assignment 2: (2 rolls of film)

Since much of the course will focus on strong composition, you must complete 2 rolls of your film on the following:

Elements: line, texture, space, value, shape, form

Principles: unity, balance, repetition, variety, emphasis, scale

You should shoot 2 rolls based onthe above elements and principles. The images must have strong compositions with obvious use of elements and principles of design. You will be graded on your understanding of composition and subject matter. You may use any combination of elements and principles

After completing the above assignments, you should have approximately 2 ½ rolls remaining to use for any topic/ideas that you choose. Concept, idea, craftsmanship and the creation of a visually successful design will all be components of every grade. Do not wait until the last minute to shoot. I want to see strong images with strong subject matter.
