Grading Procedures:
The majority of your grades will come from writing, either in-class or out-of-class assignments. In-class and Out-of-class compositions will be graded as published pieces with grammar, structure, style and organization taken into account as well as the content and analysis. The grades will be broken down into the following categories and percentages:
Assessments Semester 1-
35%- Classroom Assessments: includes class work, homework, and in-class discussions
45%- Summative Assessments: includes unit assessment/test, quizzes, major writing assignments, and projects
15%- Comprehensive Final Exam: Objective Exam
5%- Performance Final Exam: Essay Performance Exam
In-class essaysWe will be writing on several writing prompts in class throughout the year. These writing assignments will be worth up to 100 points and will be evaluated based on IB published rubrics.
Quizzes (announced and unannounced) will generally be worth 20-50 points each.
Journal Assignments will consist of in-class and out-of-class written work and willbe assessed at the teacher’s discretion.
Homework will include personal and critical responses in journals and on looseleaf paper. Since homework is formative, it will be graded at the teacher’s discretion.
Projects/Papers/Presentations will be discussed in detail and assigned during the semester. Students will receive specific instructions on each paper and project. Due dates will be announced at the time each assignment is given. The point value of these projects will vary depending on the assignment.
Note: Though I will grade a majority of your work, not all assignments will be graded. I will not tell you which writings and assignments I will grade, so do your best on all of them.
Additionally, you will be responsible for orally presenting material in front of the class. This may be either a presentation on a work we are studying or on the philosophical, historical, or literary background of some work we are studying. Depending upon numbers, I may let you work in small groups or individually.
Teacher Conferences: Any student who scores a 75 or below on any essay will need to take advantage of writing conferences with your teacher. Schedule an appointment and come prepared with questions and an essay to discuss.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is the representation of someone else’s idea or words as one’s own, and is the worst intellectual crime possible. I find it reprehensible and unacceptable. If I discover that you have plagiarized anything, from homework to papers to projects, I will see that you receive the most severe punishment possible with a minimum of a zero on the assignment and a meeting with your parents.
Extra Credit:
Since this is a college-level course, you will receive 10 points on your final average. Thus, I will give absolutely NO extra credit.
Late Work:
This is a college level course, and as such you are expected to be prepared for class each day. Late class work will be accepted one day late for a maximum of 50% of the earned score. It is up to you to make sure that you have turned in the assignment on the day that it is due. If you know that you will not be in on the day an assignment is due, turn it in early. If you are at school for any part of that day, I expect you to turn in the assignment to me.
Email Policy:
I will be creating a group email for each class so that we can stay in touch. On days that you will not be in class, you are required to email me for the work you missed. This is a university-level requirement, and I would encourage you to take advantage of the technology that we have available. When we are in touch, there are no misunderstandings about what is going on and what is expected of you. I will also create parent group emails so that they are connected to our activities, as well.
