· Welcome
The meeting was convened at 1:00 pm. Minutes from the first ELPSA meeting, Nov. 13, 2014 were shared and approved.
1. CABE Conference 2015 update
a. Three sites said they are bringing their EL programs and a team of people: AVHS, HHS, and KHS.
2. CABE Theme: “Making 21st Century Multilingual Dreams Come True”
a. We promoted the opportunity for each site to submit art based on the CABE conference theme.
- Art must be submitted to Imelda Trinklein, at the District Office by Feb. 27, 2015.
3. ELA / ELD Framework Update and PD
a. We discussed the district’s plans to organize a series of all-day PDs in March and April for all content area teachers to learn the new ELD standards. Workshops would focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
b. We reminded teachers about the regional CABE PD, “Unpacking the new ELD Standards,” on Sat. Jan. 24, at Embassy Suites. Approximately 65 faculty from the AVUHSD and 40 faculty from PSD are expected attend.
c. What EL PD have you done, or plan to do, at your site? Mirna said we will send each EL Advisor an email to collect information about EL PD at their sites.
4. EL Brochure
a. We collaboratively reviewed the current draft of the EL Brochure, a template for each site to apply their own logo and information about their respective EL programs.
b. Imelda provided clarity regarding the EL Brochure’s information that described the waiver option.
c. A Spanish version will be made after the English EL Brochure is approved.
5. Intermediate EL classes
a. All participants engaged in a collaborative reflection activity, sharing perspectives, concerns, suggestions, and questions regarding the new Intermediate ELD classes.
b. Ricardo said counseling departments at each site are registering students now in January; and the process to create the master schedule for 2015-16 is underway. How will this affect registration for the Intermediate ELD classes?
c. David Yerkes said EL Advisors need more guidance from the District Office for planning purposes, and if more class sections are needed for Intermediate ELD students.
d. Questions and discussion covered issues related to combining ELs with English-only students
e. Issues with Intentional non-learners were discussed
f. Motivational Issues regarding the elective status of Intermediate EL classes.
g. Imelda asked EL Advisors: “What might Intermediate EL classes look like at your site?”
h. Are mixed classes, with Lit Support, CAHSEE, and AVID an option to consider?
6. DELAC Meeting
a. Imelda Trinklein gave a brief debrief from Jan. 13 DELAC meeting.
b. The DELAC approved a Parent Survey that Imelda will soon distribute to all sites to administer.
7. Reclassification
a. David Dunstan reminded EL Advisors that reclassification is primarily the responsibility of the EL Advisors, who may then delegate responsibilities.
b. We asked the question: “How are EL Advisors using Bilingual Intermediate Clerks to support the reclassification process?” Jeremiah Griffey explained the process at his site, with him identifying students, and the BIC providing valuable support, filling out documents, contacting students, and parents, etc.
c. Jeremiah Griffey shared a story about a Palmdale HS EL student, who earns “A” grades in AP and Honors classes, but scored only Early Intermediate for Listening on the CELDT, and was disqualified from reclassification. The student most likely did not take the Listening part seriously. Now she must wait an entire year to retake the CELDT to be eligible for reclassification.
d. Mirna Urias stressed the need for EL Advisors to inform students about the importance of the CELDT and encourage them take all tests seriously.
e. We reminded teachers to meet with their EL students to explain the reclassification process, and importance of CELDT, CAHSEE, grades, etc.
8. EL Forms & Documents: Standardizing all district-level forms for 2015
a. Imelda Trinklein reaffirmed the goal to standardize all EL forms and documents for 2015. Each site may add their own logo to EL forms and documents, which will include district information in the footer.
b. Advised each EL Advisor to submit their EL forms and documents to our office for review.
9. Edge curriculum
a. The Edge Intermediate Blue books were shared at the meeting. The Blue level is one option to consider for the new Intermediate ELD classes.
b. General feedback from observations and/or teaching experiences was shared. Linda Fabela expressed she enjoys teaching the Edge curriculum in her ELD Beginning and Early Intermediate classes.
10. Questions, Concerns, Suggestions
a. Stephanie Harris said she needs formal CELDT training. Mirna assured Stephanie that we will provide her with CELDT training.
b. Closing Question: What schools have the Intermediate ELD classes? At present, KHS has enrolled Intermediate students in a Read 180 section; however, the Read 180 curriculum is not appropriate for their needs.
· Next meeting: March 17 (Tues), preferred choice / alternate choice was March 19 (Thurs)
· Meeting Adjourned at 3:00 pm.
