AUT Report 2012

Another busy year for AUT, student’s, markers and examiners has resulted throughout 2012.

We have seen an increase in student numbers enrolling onto the Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology. Hopefully a new trend is occurring and we will see more and more trainees entering the profession year on year. The 2012 statistics can be seen below.

2010 / 2011 / 2012 / Diference
Anaesthesia I / 32 / 20 / 27 / +7
An.Tech I / 32 / 20 / 29 / +9
Anaesthesia II / 35 / 29 / 16 / -13
An. Tech II / 45 / 38 / 33 / -5
Anaesthesia III / 41 / 41 / 27 / -14
Anaesthesia IV / 45 / 43 / 33 / -10

2012 has a seen new cohort of National Assessors (NA’s). Some existing NA’s have been retained and there has been recruitment of new assessors too. The NA’s are:

Ian Boxsell

Ian Clark

Rachael Jones

Diana Haase

Muriel Cooper

Richard Patteneden

Michelle Brown

The Na’s are an integral part of the moderation of the Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology and I would like to say a big thank you for their continuing enthusiasm and professionalism in maintaining the very high standards we have come to expect.

WPA’s are again doing a great job in training the students in the workplace and this is reflected in the quality of results that are gained at the end of each year.

There are some slight changes in the way NZATS and AUT operate in the way the academic papers offered are managed. Now if there are any changes the Medical Science Council is informed not NZATS.

The updated levels of supervision have seen their first year and there have been minimal reported issues with the increased time spent at level 1.

In July the Mid Year Education Meeting was held in Christchurch. This was the first year that WPA’s were invited as well as the usual attendees. It was well attended with some very lively debates happening. This meeting is a very important session and I do hope that numbers increase for attendance.

Following the successful meeting in July, the Conference Education Meeting occurred in Auckland with similar success.

Helen Paul was the most recent successful recipient of top technician awarded by the New Zealand Society of Anaesthetists. Congratulations Helen.

Once again there has been a lot of work done by marker, examiners and paper writers. Without their ongoing suport and high standards the diploma would not be where it is today.

Wendy Emson and Kirsten Hansen are continuing to work diligently from their AUT campus, thanks.

Lets look forward to another great year next year.
