ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2017-18

Good morning to all the dignitaries on the dais, off the dais, invitees and students.

Let me have the privilege to take you around the mile stones of progress achieved in the AcademicYear:

Mangalore Academy of Professional Studies, a premier educational institution situated in the heart of the Mangalore city aims at integration and inclusiveness. MAPS under the management of Pavoor Education Trust stood ahead of all odds and have been able to reach the pinnacle of success through strains and struggles. Sri. Dinesh Kumar Alva is a pillar of strength along with the trustees SRI KIRAN R SHETTY, SMT SUJAYA D ALVA, SMT VIDYA K SHETTY who through their noble objective of Education For Life has heralded revolutionary transformation of educational landscape of this part of the region.

The journey beganin the year 2006 with a Vision “To be a respected institute for imparting and believing in quality education with a commitment to develop students with ethics and values by promoting talents to show case their true potential.’ Our mission is ‘Imparting domain – specific knowledge,positive attitude, continuous learning habits to bring out true talents from the students’.

STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

The quality and performance of an educational institution is measured mainly by the academic excellence of the students. College puts in lots of effort to get best results. The students have a desire to excel and as a result have worked hard to get best grades.

B.COM (DAY):

IstB.Com (A Sec) -overall pass percentage is 72 %.

and 27 Students have secured distinction

1st B.Com ( B Sec) -overall pass percentage is 81 %.

And 29 students have secured distinction

II ndB.Com - overall pass percentage is 90%

And 30 of the students have secured distinction

IIIrd B.Com - overall pass percentage is 88 %.

And 40 students have secured distinction

The pass % of outgoing batch of 2016-17 was 72% and

15 students have secured distinction

BASLP:

1st BASLP– Result to be announced

IInd BASLP - overall pass percentage is82%.

And 6 students have secured distinction

IIIrd BASLP - overall pass percentage is 86%.

The pass % of outgoing batch of 2016-17 was 84%

CPT/IPCC:

Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.
R. Collier our students have proved this time and again by outperforming their counter parts.

Right through the year, Maps has achieved success in leaps and bounds. Quoting one recent feat, the top three scorers in CPT belong to one college namely Pavan P H (158/200), Vishnu Darshan (157/200) and Kaushal Ishwar (156/200) of II B.Com. The overall pass percentage stood at an all time high of 60% with about half the students scoring a distinction. Our very own II B.Com Divakar S Nayak’s result was the cherry on the cake who was the topper at the IPCC level.

INFRASTRUCTURE

MAPS has an excellent infrastructure with three campuses, two within the city of Mangalore at Kadri Hills and Bunts hostel and the other at green serene rural surroundings in Maravoor on Mangalore-Bajpe airport road about 7 Kms from Mangalore campus. College is also committed to implement and improve the quality resources and infrastructure facilities for imparting quality education using ICT techniques.

LIBRARY

The College has a modern library with the multiple collections of books, journals ,magazines news papers and Internet Facility. We have updated our Library with Educonic Library Management Software . Our library is a annual member of Inflibnet , e- Shodu Sindu, Shod Ganga & Union Database with an access to 6000+ e- journals, e- books, thesis & dissertations and collections of different Universities. Besides this we have access to International and National journals.

LABORATORY

The BASLP department has well equipped clinical setting like Audiometry Room,BERA,Speech Therapy laboratory etc.

NAAC

The quest for excellence was institutionalised in the year 2014 in the form of IQAC. The IQAC monitors the quality aspects of the college and guides towards the assessment and accreditation process.IQAC has organised One day workshop on NAAC – New Methodology of assessment and accreditation” on 11th November 2017 for all the faculties of Constituent Colleges under Mangalore University . Dr. Tharanath,Principal ,SDM Law College & Dr. L N Sheshagiri , Assoc Prof in Eng ,Govt First Grade College , Jayanagar were the resource persons .

We are happy to announce that we have registered for the NAAC accreditation successfully and the process of submission of the SSR will be completed by the end of January 2018.

ASSOCIATIONS

To inculcate leadership qualities & to bring out the hidden talents of our students various student associations are formed. Opportunities are provided to free and fair expressions of our wards.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The student council is constituted every year. The student council has the President, Vice Presidents, Cultural Secretary , Sports Secretary & also has the representatives of various classes .Students Council Election was held on July 8, 2017. A total of 22 Student Council Representatives were present. Sharath J.of III B.Com was elected as the President. AndSheik Khaleem Javed, III B.Com, Shriparna Someshwar, III B.Com & Sneha Hannah Santhosh, III BASLP were the Vice Presidents.

The Student Council was Inaugurated on 15th july 2017 at C.V Nayak Hall by Mr. Sushil Chandra M. Project Manager, MRPL and Mr. U.T. Iftikar, Senate Member, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

Commerce Association:

The Commerce association organises guest lectures, workshop and seminars. The association guides the students to participate in intercollegiate commerce fest organized by various colleges .Inter class fest is also conducted every year in the college so as to train the student to participate in inter collegiate fest .The association also maintains the student profile and coordinates with the corporate world to enable the students to get assignments when they are out from the college after finishing their course. A National Conference on the topic GST-A Reform in Indian economy On 10th October 2017. Over 150 delegates from across the state had attended the conference.35 delegates had presented their paper on GST in different sectors. CA Keshava Ballakuraya was the chief guest. CA Yashashwini,CA Subhashchanda Salian,CA Sujaya D Alva, Mrs Gayathri S chaired the technical sessions.

A talk on Cyber Crime –a General Scenario for III B.com students on 11th August 2017., Advocate Uday Prakash Muliya was the Resource person.

In order to acquire and equip the right skill & to grab the right job in corporate sector,Personality Development programme was organisedfor IIIrd B.Com students.Dr.Preeti Keerthi Dsouza, Resource personon 7th September 2017

Students have been sent to attend the guest lecture arranged by the KCCI on GSTSeminar on Art of success for IAS,IPS,IFS and other civil service programme& for Sayadri commerce Conclave 2018,Management Model Exhibition to Shree Devi Institute of Technology.

An awareness talk on “Drug Abuse & Drug Addiction” was conducted on
03-11-2017. Mr.Maruthi S.V, Sub-Inspector of Police, Mangalore East Police Station, addressed the students.

IIIrd year B.Com students Abhay Krishna Shwetha J Rao have presented paper on the topic Cost Benefit Analysis & Saidheeraj & Pooja presented a paper on the topic A Need For Training & Development in Alvas College, Moodbidri.

Students have participated in theJatha from Town Hall to D C Office in connection with Crime prevention month organized by Department of Police.

SPEECH & hEARING Association:

Department of speech and hearing organized one day RCI recognized CRE on “Advances in Auditory Electrophysiological Evaluatuions- AEPs” on 8th December 2017 . Nearly 112 delegates from various colleges had attended . Dr. Akshatha Shetty , Consultant ENT Specialist was the chief Guest. Mrs . Mala Mahesh, Reader ,Dr. Kausalenrda Kumar , Assoc Prof , KMC Mangalore,Dr. Krishna Y , Prof & Head , Dept of Audiology & SLP , Manipal School of Allied Health Sci & Mr . Mohan Kumar Kalaish , Asst Prof , KMC Mangalore were the resource persons.

Many screening camps, the department has organised in various places some of them being atKavoor Anganavadi, NMPTAnganvadi , Kodical Sri Ramabhavan Anganvadi ,Yougster club panambur , Chiranthana oldage home surathkal , St Agnes PU College,Bendoor , DKZP Higher primarySchool , Kudupu, ASHYA colony School , Vamanjoor ,Santhosh Nagar perare School , Thiruvail School Vamanjoor , Tapasya Montessori , Padil & Ballalbagh Anganvadi

Speech and Hearing evaluation week was held from 27th November to 3rd December 2017

NSS Unit:

NSS Unit of the college had organized Seven Days residential Camp from 25th December to 31st Decembe 2017 at Malavoor Grama Panchayathand D. K. Hiriya prathamika Shale ,Near Maravoor. The purpose of the camp was to inculcate various values such as social,cultural,moral,educational and ethical. On 31st Dec 2017 “Swaccha Bharath Abhiyan” was conducted in and around the vicinity of Maravoor in association with Ramakrishna Mutt, Mangalore.NSS Volunteers Conducted various activities such as Skit on save girl child ,Aids Awareness for the localities. Fire service station unit of mangalore gave a Demonstration about the safety measures to be taken during the emergencies and disasters to the Volunteers .

Parent Teacher Association

Parent teacher interface is frequently arranged to have close rapport between the parents and teachers which help the students to excel academically.PTA of this academic year was inaugurated by the Chairman on 26th August 2017& Mr. Vaikunt Prabhu was appointed as the President . Orientation Programme for the parents was held on15th July 2017. Resource persons- CA Shivaram Kamath , CA Sunil Shenoy, CA Sujaya D Alva, CA Rajaram Shenoy, CA Usha Kiran Shenoy, CA Jennifer Mendis, CA Subhaschandra Salian, CA Dhara Thakkar gave their inputs on the various professional courses in Commerce .A talk on Parenting adolescence by Dr. Supriya Hegde, Psychiatrist, Father Muller’s Hospital was organised.

STUDENTS WELARE

In our efforts towards academic excellence and growth, actions are initiated to bridge the gap between the institution and industry. Each of our students’ strength and weakness in academics/aptitude/other skills are identified and they are fine tuned through various Bridge courses, Certificate courses, Personality Development, Life Skill programme, Courses on Global Competencies, Counselling etc. To maintain up to date information about the activities of the college and performance of the ward, a digital updation to the mobile numbers of the guardians/parents is carried out.

As per the guidelines of the University the institution has a student welfare officer who takes care of the entire activities concerning the students. Dr. KAVITHA ,Lecturer Department of Hindi is entrusted with the responsibility of student welfare.

PROCTOR SYSTEM

To maintain a close rapport between students and teacher Proctor system is followed, wherein the students are frequently counselled and solution to the problem are sought by the proctor. Besides we have committees/cells such as grievances Cell, cell to Combat Women Harassment and Human Rights Cell.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Various government scholarships like Merit Scholarship, Beedi Scholarships SC/ ST Scholarship, Minority students Scholarship,Ex-servicemen’s Children Scholarship are made available to the students. Endowment Awards namely Surathkal Bandadi House Sri Mahabala Shetty memoriall award for University Rank Holder of Maps ,Mulki Padumane Sri Raghava Acchanna Shetty Memorial Award for the best all-round Male student ,Pavoorguthu Smt.Kalyani P Alva Memorial Award for the best all-round female student,Pavoor Guthu Smt.Janaki C Naik Memorial Award for the best all-rounder student and Mrs.Gladis Pinto Maps Library Fund Award donated by Mr. Charles Pinto ,former chief librarian of our organisation, for the student who makes the best use of the library are awarded to the students . Institute of Management Accountants has awarded with Scholarship worth1,89,000/- to 3 of our students .College has been helping economically backward & meritorious students by giving scholarship through the year .The total amount of scholarship distributed in the Academic year 3,50,000/-

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Our ex students are also the part & parcel of our college .We are happy to place on record that our alumni are placed well in various disciplines and places.

COLLEGE MAGAZINE

In order to encourage the literary talents of the students in various areas and languages the college magazine is being published. The college also has wall magazine to show artistic talents

SPORTS & GAMES

Sports and games play a major role in the all-round development of the student career .Our students actively take part in various sports activities .Many indoor & outdoor events are conducted. College has a good number of team players who participates in various sports tournaments in inter collegiate sports and games events such as Independence Day football , TT,Chess, Kabadi ,Cricket . Sports Day of this year was held on 22nd Dec 2017 in Mangala Stadium . Sri . BA Mohiuddin Bava , MLA , Mangalore North Constituency & Mr. Vikas M Puthran , International Athlete were the guests.

SPORTS

BASLP Staff & students participated in 1st intercollegiate speech& hearing super six cricket & Throw ball tournament on 19th March, 2017 at Nitte Institute of Speech and Hearing . The team was awarded Runner-up prize in Cricket. BASLP staff Mr. Girish was awarded as best bowler.

Our college cricket team won the Ist set of Mangalore University level tournament and entered pre quarter to be held on 22nd Jan 2018

Abhay D Shetty, Kshitij J, III B.com, Ananthesh Bhat, Mahesh Acharya, Akash Baskaran of II B.Com participated in TT Tournament organized by MGM College Udupi.

Cultural

BASLP students participated in 1st intercollegiate cultural competition organized by DK ISHA at Father Muller’s College of Speech and Hearing on 18th February, 2017.

BASLP students participated in AIISH Aawaaaz 2017 at All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore

Jasmitha, Deeksha and Prajwal of II B.Com won consolation prize in Rangoli competition held in Laxmi Memorial College.

Jasmitha, Deeksha ,Prajwal and Anusha Alva of II B.Com won 2ND prize in Pookalam held in Srinivas College of Hotel Management.

The students of our collegeare participated in inter-collegiate fine arts competition SRISHTI-2017 organised by SDM College Ujire , Navarang 2017 organised by Milagres College Mangalore.

Team G2 Creations consisting of our students Ms. Sowbhagya, Krishna, Likhith, Vijeth Kumar, Pavithra, Ajay B N , Kavya S of our college conducted Beach Treasure Hunt programme On 31st Dec 2017 in Tannir Bhavi Beach.The First female Kannada Rap song was released by the Team Rhythm of Beats, directed and sung by Pranali Gupta of III B.Com.

On 12th Jan 2018 Shooting of Mangalore’s Anthem was also done in MAPS College premises, for Mangalore’s Best Orator Competition.

Literary:

The students have participated in Hindi Essay Competition organised by MRPL at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore , in English essay writing competition organised by Canara College ,Verbattle Debate Competition ,Mangalore University Intercollegiate Literary Competitions at Rosario College of Management. National and Circle Level Letter writing competition “Bapu You Inspire Me” held by Indian Postal Services Department ,Essay and Telefilm Competition organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra- Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in association with the Office of the District Youth coordinator held at Canara College, Mangalore.

FEST :

The students have participated in SDM fest ,‘Talent Hunt 2017’ organised by Moti Mahal College of Hotel Management, Mangalore.‘Econovanza 2017’ organised by St. Aloysius College, Mangalore.‘Kims Kalrav 2017’ organised by Kanachur Institute of Management and Science, Mangalore.‘Melange 2018’ organised by St. Agnes College, Mangalore.‘Yugao 2018’ organised by Besent Evening College, Mangalore.‘Encarnacio 2018’ organised by Canara College, Mangalore.‘Padua Verve 2018’ organised by Padua College, Mangalore.

Shashipriya and Shriparna of III B.com. won Ist place in Collage In ‘Kims Kalrav 2017’ organised by Kanachur Institute of Management and Science, Mangalore. Kshitij of III B.Com, Akash Kumar and Mukund Harsha of II B.Com won Ist place in Face Painting,, Renwik Gregory, Akash Kumar, Mukund Harsha and Prathik D’Souza of II B.Com secured 2nd place in Mad Ads and Shashipriya and Shriparna of III B.Com secured 2nd place in Flower Arrangement.in ‘Rendezvous 2017’ organised by Sarosh Institute of Hotel Administration, Mangalore.

Abhay D Shetty of III B.Com won Ist place inJAM,, Akash Bhaskaran, Nishan Amin and Mahesh Achar of II B.Com secured 2nd place in Vine Making and Anirudh Bhat of I B.Com secured 2nd place in Photo Journalism and thereby the team won the Overall Runners Up Trophy in ‘Melange 2018’ organised by St. Agnes College, Mangalore.
