ANNUAL REPORT 2004-05

The school reopened on June 1stafter mid summer vacation with a total strength of 120 students and 25 teaching staff and 6 non-teaching staff.

On 20th June, inspection for grant was conducted by the Regional Director of Social Welfare, Ernakulam.

Three students of DSE(MR) from Sneha Sadan, Angamaly came to do their training for two months as part of their curriculum from 3rd August to 13th October.

The Independence Day was celebrated at ShilpaSchool with great joy. Sweets were distributed by

Onam was celebrated at ShilpaSchool with much joy and gaiety, followed by a grand feast and cultural programme for students and staff .The event was sponsored by Mr. Gopalakrishnan of Sugama Printers.

On 29th September, 60 children, 27 parents and 17 staff enjoyed a day picnic at VeegaLand, Kakkanad.

On 6th October, Trainees of ‘Raksha’ visited our school and interacted with some of our Cerebral Palsy students and also did a few case studies.

On 18th October, our Social worker, Meera attended a meeting at the Chamber of the District Collector, Kakkanad to plan the programs for the World Diabled Day, 2004.

On 27th October, Dr. Premila visited Sneha Sadan, Angamaly and took a class on

“Parental Involvement in Training Program”.

In the month of November, our students were taken to Snehanilayam, Kakkanad for Athletics preliminaries. Those who were selected from the prelims, participated in the Special School Olympics.

A grand lunch was sponsored by Mr.Somanathan & family at Childrens park, Ernakulam.They also came to the venue to distribute Chicken biriyani & ice creams to all our students.

From 16th Nov to 20th Nov, four trainees of ‘Raksha’ visited our school and interacted with few of our students.

35 students and 12 staff members were taken for the Aqua Show at Ernakulam on 20th November.

From 29th Nov to 3rd Dec, NABUR conference was held at Hotel Abad, Chullickal. 13 participants from various countries were present. Shilpa was the local host for this prestigious meeting. On 2nd Dec, NABUR staff and members visited Shilpa school. Toys and sweets were distributed to our students by them.

Students and staff of Assisi Vidhyaniketan and four other members of Rotary club visited our school on Dec 2nd. The students entertained our children with various cultural programs.

On Dec 3rd, 2004 as part of the World Disabilities Day, our students participated in the Sports and cultural competition organized by the Social Welfare Department held at Maharajas College Ground.Our students made use of this opportunity to exhibit their talents to the public and also won many prizes.

On 8th Dec, as part of the World Mentally Disabled Day, a short story on the disabled was telecast by the Kairali Channel. Dr.Premila and our student, were some of the actors in this tele-story.

20 trainees from Sneha Sadan, Angamaly visited our school on 10th Dec.

On 19th Dec, Dr. Premila attended IMA Disability Meet at Guruvayoor.

This year Christmas was celebrated with great joy. There were games organized for the siblings of our students. Later the siblings performed cultural programs. A Christmas party with Santa Claus was enjoyed by all siblings and students.

Four of our students – Noufal, Jenseer, Nimila and Jishnu had a surgery at LakeshoreHospital.

Our new principal, Ms. Jancy joined the school on 3rd January, 2005.

Ms.Caroline , occupational therapist from Canada joined our school for a period of 6 weeks.

60 students and 3 teachers from AVILA College of Education, Edakochi visited our school.

The school had various personalities visiting during the academic year.

Members of Rotary Club of Cochin Down Town visited our school and magnanimously contributed Rs. I lakh towards truss work on the front side of the school building and ball playpen for the children. Mr. Sathyan Nair, General Manager, Cellular Operations of India, Mr. & Mrs. Kuriakose, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, few Members of the Spastic Society of Indiavisited our school.

On 14th January, kitchen utensils were donated by the parents of ShilpaSchoolto Nidhin’s family, since they had lost the same to the tsunami.

Mrs. Lekha from CASP, RajagiriCollege visited our school for the purpose of providing sponsorship for 3 of our students.(Tincymol, Kannan, Nivisha).

Adv. Charlie from England visited our school on 31st January.

Mrs. Sheela DSE(MR) student of Nirmala Sadan conducted an awareness class on “RehabilitationVillage”.

On 8th February, along with Dr.Premila and Mrs. Manju, Early Interventionist, two other staff attended the Training Programme for Parents and siblings conducted by “Mithram CharitableSociety” at Renewal Centre, Kaloor. Dr. Premila spoke on Disabilities, Causes Prevention and also on Early Intervention. Manju spoke on therapies.

A delicious lunch was sponsored by Mr & Mrs. Umesh on 11th of Febrruary.

On 14th Feb, District Social Welfare Officer Mr. Yoshith, visited our school for inspection.

37 students from our school participated in the Special School Olympics held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on 18 and 19th of Feb. Our school got 9 medals including 1 gold medal.

On 21st February, 5 students from AVILA College of Education, Edakochi visited our school .

On 24th Feb, there was an Inspection by the D.E.O to examine the facilities for functioning the school .

Two of our staffs and one parent attended a workshop on “Learning Strategies and Teaching in Autism”, conducted by Adarsh, Tripunithura on 26th February.

On 6th of march, the District Governor of Rotary Club Mr. Aboobaker, along with the members visited our school for the inauguration of trusswork.

We would like to mention the names of Dr. Revati ( Ophtalmologist ) , Dr. Sanjay ( Dermatologist ), Mr. Joseph Mathew(Clinical Psychologist), ENT Specialist who rendered selfless services to our disabled children.

We are thankful to Cookies India Ltd, manufacturers of Craze Biscuits, for continuing their help by providing our children biscuits everyday.

During this academic year, regular P.T.A meetings, Parents meetings and Staff meetings were also held.

At this juncture, the ardent support extended by our parents is really appreciable.

We also thank the Government of India for their support and the local Government, Mayor of Cochin Corporation & other officials and the District Collector for their whole hearted support and interest in our organization.
