Dear Sir/Madam,
The World Meteorological Organization will organise, under the auspices of the Commission for Basic Systems (CBS), a Technical Conference on Data Processing and Forecasting Systems.The conference will be held in Cairns, Australia, from 2 to 3 December 2002, immediately preceding CBS-Ext. 2002xtraordinary.Simultaneous interpretation in English, French, Russian, and Spanish will also be provided.
The technical conference will be organised for experts from a wide audience including WMO Members, all members of CBS, members of other Technical Commissions, representatives of related international programmes, the environmental research community and the private sector. These with a view to facilitate exchange of information on the latest developments in Data Processing and Forecasting Systems, focusing on Ensemble Prediction Systems (EPS) and Severe Weather Forecasting. It will also provide a forum for training and capacity-building, particularly for participants from developing countries. The Conference Announcement is attached for information in Annex 1.
A Conference Committee (CC), composed of five members headed by Ms Angele Simard (Canada), who will serve as the Conference Director has been established. The CC assisted by the Secretariat is responsible for the organization of the conference and further elaboration of the subjects of the proposed five sessions and also for selecting the papers for oral presentations or poster displays.

The purpose of this letter is to solicit abstracts of papers proposed for presentation at the conference. Experts wishing to present a paper are kindly requested to prepare an abstract of the paper and complete the form given in Annex2 of this letter. An electronic copy of the form in MS Word97 format can be retrieved from the WMO Internet server at:

Abstracts, not exceeding half a page, should be submitted in English, French, Russian, or Spanish. It would considerably ease the work of the CC and help to reduce costs, if the authors of abstracts in French, Spanish or Russian languages could include an English translation of their abstracts.
The completed form and abstracts should be sent to the WMO Secretariat by mail, fax or via e-mail in ASCII, HTML or MS Word formats. Abstracts should be sent to the WMO Secretariat by facsimile (41-22) 730-8021 or by electronic mail ( or ) not later than 1May 2002. Theauthors of papers that have been accepted will be notified inJuly2002 and their full papers should be submitted to the Secretariat not later than 1October2002.

World Meteorological Organization
The World Meteorological Organization is pleased to announce the
CBS Technical Conference on Data Processing and Forecasting Systems
Cairns, Australia, 2 to 3 December 2002
This conference on Data Processing and Forecasting Systems will bring together research and development scientists and operational service professionals in the government academia and private sectors. These include those from international and national centres, and those who make available research results and or forecast products or use forecast products from national, regional or global data processing and forecasting systems. Emphasis for the conference will be on ensemble prediction systems that enable or enhance the capabilities of the weather and climate communities to address severe weather issues. Sessions will be held on scientific aspects of EPS and its operational application. Other focus is on severe weather forecasting in particular requirements, approaches used and interpretation of forecast guidance. Data processing and forecasting systems experts from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, research institutes, Universities and the private sector will address the following main subjects:
(a)Ensemble forecasting - the scientific approach
(b)Application of ensemble forecasting systems to real situations: a user perspective
(c)User requirements for severe weather forecasting
(d)Approaches used in forecasting severe weather - Use and interpretation of forecast guidance in severe weather situations.
Simultaneous interpretation in English, French, Russian, and Spanish will be provided at the conference. Abstracts of proposed papers, not exceeding half a page, can be submitted in English, French, Russian, or Spanish but authors of abstracts in French, Russian or Spanish should include an English translation. Abstracts should be sent to the WMO Secretariat point of contact given below via mail, fax or electronic mail in ASCII, HTML or MS Word formats. Allabstracts should be received not later than 1May 2002.
Papers accepted for presentation will be published as received in their original language in the World Weather Watch Technical Reports series. Details on the format of the papers and presentations will be contained in an acceptance letter to be sent to authors in July 2002 and their full-contributed papers should be submitted to the Secretariat not later than 1 October 2002.
