Personal Protective Equipment Required
  • Face Mask
  • Cryogenic gloves
  • Gown / Labcoat
  • Approved dewar on appropriate trolley with suitable wheels

Before work Commences
Transportation of dewars by lift is only available between 10 and 10:30am Monday to Friday.
  • The morning that transportation is required researcher “Pages” the Kone Lift Mechanic on a FMC internal phone by calling # 89 38357 *
In this phone call pre-arrange the time and location that you will meet.
  • Researcher - Collect appropriate PPE
  • Researcher - Fill dewar prior to pre-arranged transportation time – leave in 4D-235 until ready to transport
  • Lift Mechanic - Collect the 2 Hand-held-radios from the FMC Security desk (next to Exit door to Emergency Department ambulance parking area) Security Xtn: 64569
 Ensure Security staff member sets hand-held-radios to “Channel 2 Maintenance”
Safe Procedures
This Safe Procedure must be followed for the Safe Transportation of Liquid Nitrogen Dewars within FMC via lift on a suitable trolley
Transportation is only available between 10 and 10:30am Monday to Friday and must be done in conjunction with the Kone Lift mechanic.
*If at any time a spill occurs within the lift, the Lift Mechanic is to “Park” the lift on level 2
  • At the pre-arranged time (some-time between 10 & 10:30 am)
Researcher and Kone Lift Mechanic meet at the Level 4 D-Block “Fish” double lifts. The Lift Mechanic will have already collected the hand-held-radios from Security (Refer to “before work commences” section of SWMS)
  • Researcher
 Is given one of the hand-held-radios by the Lift Mechanic
 Tests hand-held-radios with Lift Mechanic
 Confirms the lift floor level that the lift will be moved to.
  • Lift Mechanic
 Keeps the 2nd hand-held- radio
 Walks to lift control room
  • Researcher
 Goes to 4D-235 (Liquid Nitrogen room) and collects the pre-filled dewar
 Brings dewar back to level 4 D-Block “fish” lift
 Radios lift mechanic to inform him that the dewar is at level 4 ready for collection.
  • Lift Mechanic
 Operates lift from the control panel to move it to level 4 and opens doors.
  • Researcher
 Puts the dewar safely into lift
 Secures dewar – (appropriately for its size and type)
 Moves out of lift
 Radios Lift Mechanic to inform him that the dewar is safely in lift
 Waits until doors are closed
 Walks up stairs to the lift designated floor level
  • Lift Mechanic operates lift from the control panel to:
 Closes lift door
 Moves lift to the lift designated floor level
  • Researcher – When at the designated floor level
 Radios Lift mechanic to inform him that they have arrived at the designated floor level
  • Lift Mechanic
 Opens lift doors
 If notified by researcher that a spill has occurred within the lift, the lift mechanic is to “Park” the lift on level 2
  • Researcher - Once the doors open and the researcher can see that the dewar inside is standing upright and safe:
 Removes the dewar from the lift
 Radios the lift mechanic to inform him that the dewar has been safely removed.
  • Lift Mechanic
 Closes lift doors
 Returns lift operation to “normal”
 Walks to designated floor level to meet researcher
  • Researcher
 Meets the Lift Mechanic at the designated floor level
 Gives the hand-held-radio back from to the Lift Mechanic
 Takes dewar to lab / storage area
  • Lift Mechanic
 Returns hand-held-radios to Security (ED Dept).
