Andalusia and Indra lead an international R&D&i project so patients may access their medical records in telemedicine services

·  The aim of the initiative is to allow chronic patients to assume a more effective role in treating their illness using new technologies

·  The project involves the participation of entities from ten countries and includes the implementation of seven pilots in Spain, Italy, Turkey, Norway, Austria and the Czech Republic

·  The IT company assumes the role of technological partner in the project through its Advanced Digital Health Centre in Seville

The Autonomous Government of Andalusia's Department of Health leads together with Indra, as a technological partner, the development of a European R&D&i project that has the objective of providing chronic patients with online and secure access to their medical history through the generalised implementation of telemedicine services. The PALANTE (PAtient Leading and mANanaging their healThcare through EHealth) project aims to help patients play a more active role in caring for their health, together with the medical team treating them, through the use of new information technologies.

The initiative, with a €6.3 million budget, has an execution period of 36 months and falls within the European R&D&i project “Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP).” The project includes the implementation of pilots in Spain (Andalusia and the Basque Country), Italy, Turkey, Norway, Austria and the Czech Republic, as well as two additional experiences in France and Denmark.

Indra will coordinate and manage its involvement in the project from its Advanced Digital Health Centre of Excellence in Seville. The IT company will act as the technical coordinator of the project and will be responsible for implementing the pilots in the various countries. Some of the functions it will perform will be monitoring the set of telemedicine services selected in real conditions and assuming the analysis and design of the necessary adjustments so that each pilot may be integrated with the corresponding health systems.

In addition, the technological multinational will also participate in defining the basic criteria and functionalities to ensure a coherent focus of the services offered in the pilots and a common system for exchanging experiences, as well as in assessing the results and impacts of the electronic health services experienced in each pilot.

Andalusian pilot

The Andalusian pilot consists of one of the largest contributions to the project and is based on integrating two prototypes into the Andalusian Healthcare System, Clic Salud and Tratamiento 2.0, in which the Indra Advanced Digital Health Centre of Excellence in Seville has participated actively to develop. Click Salud is a new citizen service that allows professionals of the Andalusian public healthcare system to consult summarised medical history in Diraya. On the other hand, Tratamiento 2.0 is a generic middleware service platform designed for the application and intelligent management of treatments for chronic illnesses. The pilot will be performed with 7,000 citizens with diabetes, both type I and type II.

Its objectives are to allow patients to access and manage their healthcare information registered in Diraya as well as to make remote management and monitoring healthcare services available, which will improve the degree to which they follow their treatments through education, healthy habits and access to healthcare information.

In practice, patients with a digital certificate can access the data registered in their medical history to consult clinical reports, treatments, allergies and warnings, among others. For example, a diabetic would be able to interact with their medical records by directly entering information from the data recorded by their glucometer so that alerts may be generated if the levels fall outside of normal ranges.

Leader in digital health

Currently, more than 32 million people in four continents benefit from the solutions and systems developed by Indra in the field of health. The company's solutions are used by more than 100,000 professionals in over 5,600 health centres and hospitals, and make it possible to arrange approximately 500,000 appointments each day.

The technology and knowledge applied at Indra for the healthcare industry are based on its portfolio of Health Solutions, specialised in areas such as telemedicine, digital imaging, electronic prescriptions or electronic medical records, among others. This platform is the result of accumulated experience in developing projects for both private as well as public entities, nationally and internationally.

In the field of electronic medical records, we can highlight the Diraya system, which has facilitated the implementation of digital medical records in Andalusia, IANUS, in the Galician Health Service (SERGAS), or Abucasis, in the Valencian Community. In Spain, Indra also leads the implementation of Electronic Prescriptions, in which aside from the current electronic prescriptions project in Asturias, it has successfully completed its installation in Aragón, Andalusia, Cantabria, Madrid, Murcia, Valencia, and Galicia, as well as in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. On the other hand, the IT company is a technological partner of SESCAM for the development of the YKONOS project (the medical digital imaging system for Castilla-La Mancha).

In addition, it is well positioned in the implementation and management of multichannel information service centres based on Internet solutions, mobile telephony and kiosks, with references in the healthcare services of Andalusia, Madrid and Valencia.

Internationally, a project that stands out is one for the Ministry of Healthcare and Defence in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which consists of the development and global operation of all the applications in the network of its National Health System, as well as the implementation of its e-Health system at the Makati medical centre, which is the most important hospital in the Philippines.

Indra is the number one IT multinational in Spain, and one of the leaders in Europe and Latin America. It is the second European company in its sector in terms of R&D, with more than €500 million invested in the last three years. Its 2011 revenues were €2,688 million, and its international activities already represent 50%. The company employs more than 36,000 professionals and has clients in 118 countries.
