ANCESTORS & DESCENDANTS

OF

ROBERT L. FRICKS (1846 - 1913)

by Robert W. Anglea

There are several speculative versions of the first generation of Fricks that came to this country. I say speculative versions because early records of this country are very scarce, especially documented records that can verify information handed down by word of mouth over several generations. However, some records do exist and can be found with a lot of work and patience. There are many gaps in tracing the Fricks family history. At times, educated guesses based on proven related facts have to be made to give continuity and meaning to the family lineage.

The version that most fits the Fricks family of Rome, Ga. is the version presented by Ardath Katsenis of Tujunga, California titled 'Progress Report on Family Research 1978 - Frick/Fricks/Frix Descendants'. This report traces the line back to a Henry/Heinrich Frick of Switzerland, 11th son of Hans I and Justins (Surer) Frick. Henry/Heinrich Frick married Regula Bar on February 27, 1635 and had the following children:

1.Jacob - Born: Dec. 3, 1640

2.Katharine - Born: Nov. 2, 1642

3.Hans II - Born: Apr. 19, 1644

4.Anna - Born: Sep. 13, 1646

5.Elizabeth - Born: July 9, 1648

6.Verena - Born: Sep. 21, 1651

7.Heinrich/Henry - Born: Dec. 11, 1653

Descendants of this line are thought to have migrated to America in the early 1700's and probably entered this country in Pennsylvania or Georgia or both. There are early records of a Heinrich/Henry Frick in Pennsylvania and a Heinrich/Henry Fritz in Georgia with children named Jacob, Hans, Anna, Elizabeth and Katharine.

A book titled 'A List of Early Settlers of Georgia' lists a Fritz family that came from Europe to Georgia on their own account. Henry Fritz, the father, was a carpenter and arrived in this country on Dec. 20, 1737 at the age of 50 years. He was a palatine trustee and servant and was listed as deceased on July 18, 1740. His wife was Maria Margaret Fritz and was 48 years old on arrival in this country. She was listed as deceased in October 1739. Their children were listed as follows:

1.Susana Catherine - died at age of 18 years before 1739.

2.Hieri - (son) - Age: 15 years at time of arrival in this country.

3. Michael - (son) - Age: 13 years at time of arrival in this country. Ran away to Carolina in December 1740.

4. Anabel - (daughter) -.Age: 6 years at time of arrival in this country. Deceased before October 1739.

5. Johan - (son) - Age: 4 years at time of arrival in this country.

6. Catherine - (daughter) - Born in Ga. - Was burned to death by accident on

Nov. 19, 1742.

This Fritz family had given names common to descendants of the Frick/Fricks family and many Fricks descendants were carpenters or woodworking craftsmen. This family could have very likely have migrated north to the Pennsylvania area and in later years migrated back south to North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia.

According to the Fricks family report of Ardath Katsenis, the Pennsylvania line of Fricks lived in the Bucks County and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania areas until the latter part of the 18th century (1770's - 1780's). Mrs. Katsenis says that Jacob Frick(s) came to Philadelphia on the 'Pennsylvania Merchant' on September 18, 1733. This was a few years before the Fritz family came to Georgia.

Land records of Rowan County, N. C. dated in the 1780's shows that a Henry and Jacob Frick(s) owned land in that area. Other Rowan County records also indicate that Henry and Jacob had family ties in Pennsylvania. It is believed that Henry and Jacob were brothers and migrated from Bucks County, Pennsylvania to Rowan County, N. C. prior to the American Revolution.

The following is an excerpt from a report by Mrs. Katsenis through the combined efforts of herself, Alice Frix Booth and Helen Treece Frick.:

The above mentioned Henry Fricks (child No. 1 of Jacob and Elizabeth Earnhard Fricks) is believed to be the ancestor of the Robert L. Fricks (1846-1913) line of Rome, Floyd Co., Ga. This is the Henry D. Fricks that settled in Cass Co, (now Bartow Co.) Ga. just prior to 1840. He had previously lived in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee prior to moving to Cass County.

HENRY D. FRICKS

It is believed that the Henry Fricks listed in the 1810 Census of Surry Co., N. C. is the ancestor of the Fricks family of Rome, Georgia. Surry Co., N. C. was formed from Rowan Co., N. C. in 1770 and is now located about two counties north of Rowan Co. He apparently moved around quite often plying his trade as a carpenter.

A Henry Fricks of equivalent age as that of the Rome, Ga. family's ancestor (Henry D. Fricks) could not be found in the 1820 Census of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee or Georgia. However, the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery granted a Henry Fricks of Rabun Co., Ga. an allotment in Lee Co., Ga., which is in the southwest part of the state. It is not known if he claimed the allotment or not.

The 1830 Census of Marion Co., Tennessee lists a Henry Fricks with a family of similar size as the Rome, Ga. family ancestor would be. The 1840 Census of Cass County (Now Bartow County), Georgia lists Henry D. Fricks as a manufacturer (probably furniture or housebuilding) with a family of equal size and age as that of the 1830 Marion Co., Tennessee Fricks. This Henry D. Fricks purchased 40 acres of land in District 17 of Cass County, Ga. in 1837. This property was sold in a Sheriff's Sale to his son, Joel G. Fricks on Feb. 8, 1850. No other records have been found as of this date (Sep. 1, 1986) that has any significant relationship to this Henry Fricks.

ROBERT LEWIS FRICKS

(1846 - 1913)

Robert Lewis Fricks was born on November 20, 1846 in Cass County (Now Bartow), Georgia. He was the second of three sons born to Isaac & Nancy Caroline (Jones) Fricks. His two brothers, Algernon Clinton and Stephen Fricks died before 1860 at a very young age. His father, Isaac Fricks died in February of 1850 of Typhoid Fever.

Isaac's father, Henry D. Fricks, came to Cass (now Bartow) County, Georgia just prior to 1840 from North Georgia (Rabun County), South Tennessee (Marion County), South Carolina, and North Carolina (Rowan County). Apparently Henry D. Fricks was a tradesman, probably carpenter, that moved around quite often.

After Isaac's death, Nancy C. Jones remained William S. Jolly on January 1, 1856. Isaac's brother, Martin A. Fricks was made guardian of Robert and Clinton Fricks, per Bartow County, Georgia Courthouse records. When Martin Fricks moved his family to Arkansas around 1860, Lorenzo D. Jones, probably Robert's grandfather, was made his guardian.

Little is known of Robert's early years. A search of Bartow County, Georgia Civil War Records lists Robert L. Fricks as being 16 years old and too young to serve in the Confederate Army. I would suspect that he would have probably had to stay close to home and help his mother and step-father, William S. Jolley, maintain their farm.

Robert L. Fricks married Mary Emma Wingard, daughter of Robert and Mary Wingard, in Bartow County, Georgia on December 19, 1869. Mary Emma Wingard was born on October 15, 1855 and died at age 29 in Bartow County on April 17, 1885. Mary Emma is buried with two of her children (possibly three) at Euharlee Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Euharlee, Ga. The grave markers lists "baby boy" (d. Sep. 16, 1870), Robert E. Fricks (d. July 16, 1885) and Abey M. Fricks (d. July 25, 1895). Robert and Mary Emma (Wingard) Fricks had 8 children.

After the death of his first wife, Robert married Mittie Ruth McDonald on December 19, 1886 in Bartow County, Georgia. Robert and Mittie moved with their family to Floyd County, Georgia in the late 1890s. Robert and Mittie (McDonald) Fricks had 9 children of their own.

Robert and Mittie (McDonald) Fricks lived in the Chulio District of Floyd County, Georgia until their death. Robert L. Fricks died on Feb. 18, 1913 and is buried in the Unity Baptist Church Cemetery on Pleasant Valley Road in the southeast part of Floyd County, Georgia. A History of Unity Church states that prior to 1956 it was a Methodist Episcopal Church. Early church records indicate that the Robert L. Fricks family were on the church rolls during this period. In fact, Robert was a trustee of the church for many years. Census records of Bartow and Floyd County, Ga. lists Robert L. Fricks as a farmer, however, family records and artifacts indicate that he was also a tradesman (carpenter or cabinetmaker) like his grandfather.

Mittie Fricks died September 8, 1914 and was survived by eight children. If she is buried next to her husband, Robert L. Fricks, there is no grave marker.

The Robert L. Fricks family records are well documented in Bartow and Floyd County, Ga. courthouse records back as early as 1840.

Unverified lineage records trace the ancestors of Robert L. Fricks back to Gregor Frick/Fricks who lived in Switzerland in the early to mid 1500s. The following family sheets and descendant chart lists all known descendants (by this researcher) of Robert Lewis Fricks up to the present date (1995).
