“Chocolate won’t let you down.”

From the wrapper of Dove Caramel Milk Chocolate

Dear Sisters-in-Law:

As I write this, we are in the midst of a terrible heat wave and drought. On Saturday, July 7, 2012, the temperature in Indianapolis reached 105°. About 4:00 that afternoon, I walked to the end of my driveway to get the mail. I looked left and right and saw no one. Not one single person was out. No children were playing, no dogs barking, no squirrels chattering. Nothing. I felt like I was the only person on the planet. Gave me the willies, I can tell you that!

I am so looking forward to our fall meeting in Evansville. I am sure that Joanna Yonts, Heather Alvey and all the ladies of LSSI are working hard to put on a wonderful meeting.

One of the items on our agenda will be a discussion of our website and a

Facebook page. I appreciate Blee Nighbert and Vicki Crim agreeing to look into this for us and I’m looking forward to hearing what they have to say. I am not the most computer literate person, to say the least, but I believe our organization does need a web presence. Please think about this and speak up at the meeting.

I know I will see some of you in September in New Orleans at the Legal Secretaries International, Inc. meeting. It’s wonderful that the members of Legal Secretaries of Indiana, Inc. are so active in local, state and international organizations. We may be a small group, but we are mighty!

Hope to see all of you in October.

In friendship,

Joyce

Minutes of Mid-Year Meeting

Spring Educational Conference

Terre Haute, Indiana

March 17, 2012

The Mid Year Meeting of Legal Secretaries of Indiana, Inc., was held on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Terre Haute in Terre Haute, Indiana. Joyce Eden, PLS, President, called the meeting to order at 1:32 p.m.

Wanda Carlson read the Mission Statement. Pat Richards recited the Legal Secretaries Creed.

President Joyce announced Vicki Wood is in Colorado welcoming a new grand-baby into the world. Teresa Koch, CL§, InCL§ will stand in as Secretary for this meeting.

There were 10 members present in person, 2 by proxy. Majority for vote 6; two-thirds was 9.

Vice President, Membership, and Director of Meetings, Blee Nighbert, PLS, CL§, INCL§ had no report. She stated a Meetings report would be later in the meeting.

The Minutes of the Fall 2011 Annual Meeting were published in the Amicus Curiae. President Joyce asked if there were any corrections or additions to the Minutes. There being none, Bev Johns moved the Minutes be accepted as printed. Teresa Koch seconded the motion. The motion unanimously passed.

A written Treasurer's report was provided by Carroll Petricek. The current balance as of March 17, 2012: checking account $4,237.85; savings certificate of deposit $4,158.59 for a total balance of $8,396.44. Blee Nighbert moved the Treasurer's report be accepted subject to audit. The motion was seconded by Pat Richard. The motion unanimously passed.

Director of Education and Certification, Teresa Koch, reported she is willing to administer the certification exam anytime anyplace. She stated there are currently three individuals in the Evansville area interested in taking the exam. The current plan is to give the exam the Friday before the Annual Meeting in Evansville.

Director of Communications, Carolyn Schramm, PLS requested to let her know of any changes to email addresses or if you do not receive the Amicus Curiae.

Director of Marketing, Susan Stoelting provided a handout of all current inventory and prices and showed the merchandise.

Assistant Treasurer/Membership Clerk Bev Johns, PLS reported a change to the address on the roster for Wabash Valley Legal Secretaries. The address is in care of Pat Richard but should be at the Derbe Court address as listed under Pat's individual name. Bev requested we keep her informed of any changes to email, address, or phone numbers.

President Joyce asked if there were any further questions for any of the Officers or Directors. There being none, the meeting moved to old business.

Blee Nighbert reported she and Vicki Wood, as the Audit Committee, met on February 25, 2012. There was one undocumented entry that was documented and corrected. The completed audit showed no discrepancies.

Blee was also asked to report on the website. Blee stated Vicki Crim is maintaining the website and did not give her anything to report. Blee did say the Circle City Legal Secretaries website ran into a slight problem that required an upgrade at minimal expense. She believed we may also need an upgrade to address the issue.

Claire Strayer was unable to attend the meeting, but Blee gave a report on the Facebook page. Our main concern was the privacy issue, but to use as a marketing tool it would not be possible to block the discussion stream so it doesn't show. If it is strictly private an individual would have to be contacted to elect to join. A simple search would not reveal the Facebook page. In that capacity it could not be utilized to market Legal Secretaries of Indiana, Inc. Before setting up the Facebook page Claire would need to know how we want it to be available. After discussion, it was suggested by Teresa to table to the next meeting where Claire may be in attendance to address our concerns and some of our younger members may also be in attendance to give additional input.

Report on Annual Meeting. Teresa Koch provided a handout for the Annual Meeting to be held in Evansville, Indiana October 13th at Casino Aztar hosted by Legal Secretaries of Southwestern Indiana. A dutch treat dinner is being planned for Friday October 12 at Max and Erma's which is available by walkway from the hotel. Two seminars are being planned, Brent Weil will be presenting a seminar regarding the NRA; Nathan Schroer of the Evansville Police Department will be speaking on his role providing support to victims of intimate crimes and their families. The recipient of our Legacy of Love will be Holly's House. Due to the cost of the meeting room, Teresa said they are looking into off site locations. After discussion, Bev Johns made a motion for Legal Secretaries of Indiana, Inc. to pay any fees associated with the meeting room cost located at Casino Aztar. Teresa Koch seconded the motion. The motion unanimously passed. If the funds are used, this action will need to be reaffirmed at the Annual Meeting.

President Joyce asked if there was any further old business. There being none, the meeting moved to new business.

President Joyce reminded us all of the recent tornado activity threatening Wanda Carlson's home and the devastation in its wake. Discussion was held on a way for Legal Secretaries of Indiana, Inc. to make a donation to the disaster relief to benefit the areas surrounding Wanda. Bev made a motion to donate from our treasury $150.00 to the Red Cross area disaster relief. After further discussion, the motion was amended to add additional funds donated individually from members would be added to the total. Blee seconded the amended motion. The motion unanimously passed. The combined total of member donations with the funds from our treasury was $267 to be donated to the Red Cross area disaster relief.

Wanda Carlson thanked us for our thoughts, prayers, and contact during the hours and days following the tragic natural disaster. She said there were many, many wonderful caring individuals, lots of industries stepping up to assist, and numerous students.

President Joyce thanked Mary Frances Klein for helping to keep us all informed about Wanda and the area. Joyce also thanked the members for their generosity.

President Joyce asked for volunteers for the Nomination Committee. Blee

Nighbert and Susan Stoelting volunteered.

President Joyce asked for bids for the Spring 2013 Meeting. On behalf of Circle City Legal Secretaries, Blee bid for the mid-year meeting to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Bev made a motion to accept the bid. Joyce seconded the motion. The motion unanimously passed.

President Joyce asked for bids for the Fall 2013 Annual Meeting. Teresa stated the Legal Secretaries International Inc. meeting will be held in Louisville, Kentucky the first part of September, 2013. Bev made a motion for the Board of Directors to host the 2013 Annual Meeting and hold it in conjunction with the International meeting. Blee seconded the motion. The motion unanimously passed.

President Joyce asked if there was any other new business. Acting Secretary Teresa stated there was a thank you note from Carolyn Schramm, the note was read.

President Joyce reminded everyone the Legal Secretaries International Inc. meeting is September 6-9 in New Orleans. She asked who was planning on attending and received an overwhelming show of hands.

The deadline for the Fall Amicus Curiae is August 1, 2012.

President Joyce thanked the Wabash Valley Legal Secretaries for a terrific program, delicious lunch, and all their hard work. Bev thanked Pat Richard for providing the majority of the food and all

of her contributions to the meal and entire event.

There being no further business, President Joyce wished us all safe travels home. The meeting adjourned at 2:09 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Teresa A. Koch, Secretary pro tem

The Evansville Police Department chose the nameHolly’s House™ for the Child and Adult Advocacy Center in honor of the work Holly Dunn Pendleton has done in educating our community on how to assist victims of sexual violence, as well as her personal efforts to reach out and help victims of sexual assault.

An Evansville native, she is the only known survivor of the Railroad Serial Killer. Holly has used her traumatic experience to help others heal from, or hopefully avoid, similar situations. She lives as a survivor, not a victim. Holly speaks at schools, women’s events, before judicial panels, and has provided training sessions for the entire Evansville Police Department. Holly was the recipient of the 2006 Jefferson Award for Community Service, sponsored by the Evansville Courier and Press; and one of five honorees of the 2006 Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for Greatest Public Service Benefiting a Community. She also serves on the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence.

For more information on Holly and her work, visit her web-site at House is a child and adult advocacy center for victims of intimate crimes. It is a safe location where adult and child victims of intimate violence are interviewed. A multi-disciplinary team including the Prosecutor’s Office, Police Department, County Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Child Services work together to provide protection and justice. Advocates from Albion Fellows Bacon Center or a counselor from the Lampion Center are also available to provide support for the victims and their families.

After being interviewed, children get to pick out a gift for doing such a good job and for being so strong.

Suggested donations to Holly’s House are items appropriate for ages 2-18. Card games, sports balls, backpacks, girls bath gels, hair accessory sets, scrapbooking items, art supply kits, jewelry sets, jewelry making kits, board games, dolls, matchbox cars, puzzles. Many donations tend to be geared toward small children rather than for older children. Suggestions for teenagers are nail polish, make up, handheld electronic games.

Also needed are office supplies: white and color copy paper

Interview supplies: flip chart pads, CD-R’s; sleeves – cloth or vinyl for CD storage, facial tissue.
