  1. What was the Long Telegram?

A telegram of 1000s of world by diplomat G. Kennan warning the Soviets would not cooperate by holding free elections as promised. Kennan explained the Soviets have an inferiority complex to the west stemming from the Russian days. Kennan argued for a policy of containment (stopping Soviet Expansion. Kennan said due to The USSR’s week political system and economy by stopping expansion the USSR would collapse without the US ever having to go to war.

  1. Explain the policy of Containment
    Stopping Soviet land expansion or the spreading of communism.
  2. Explain why the Iran Crisis was a crisis.

The USSR moved into Northern Iran. They set up a new government. The Soviets wanted the Oil Fields and access to the Persian Gulf. This violated the policy of Containment causing the crisis. Would America use force to remove the Soviets?

  1. What was the Truman Doctrine?

The policy that we would stop the spread of communism and use whatever force needed to stop soviet expansion and aggression.

  1. What was the Marshal Plan? What two countries benefited the most?
    Sec. of Stage Marshal’s plan to rebuild Western Europe after the war to create past enemies into allies and provide stabitly to avoid a post WW1 climate in which a future Hitler could emerge.
  2. What events led up the Berlin Airlift? How did America Respond?
    The Soviets still wanted German Reparations, because the US, Brittan and France combined their territory into West Germany Reparations were no longer possible. The USSR created an embargo to try to starve out the West. The US responded by going on Nuclear Alert and dropping tons of food and supplies into West Germany.
  3. What is NATO? Who are NATO Countries?
    North Atlantic Treaty Organization formed to avoid an attack by the Soviet Union. An attack against one member would be an attack against all responding in military intervention.
  4. Explain the Chinese Revolution? Why did the US support the Nationalist
    Following WW2 there was a civil war in China the Communists led by Maoze Dong and the Nationalist who the US supported led by Shanghicheck. The US supported the Nationalist because they wanted democracy. The Nationalist lost and were exiled to Taiwan. This would lead the “Cultural Revolution” and Mao’s Little Red Book
    9. What were the New Policies in Japan? Why did the US support Japan so strongly?
    following the Chinese Revolution and the fall of the Nationalist, Japan was needed to become a democracy. General Douglas MacArthur led the way to democratize Japan. Policies included building their industry and economy. Like West Germany the Truman Doctrine will protect Japan against any communist aggression.
