Alphington Primary School: PE and Sport (2014/15)

Annual Report to the Governors

With the continued and very welcome assistance of Sports Premium Funding, PE and Sport has continued to go from strength to strength at this school. We are proud to deliver high-quality curriculum sport and games sessions, across both key stages and the Foundation Stage, alongside a wide and varied programme of extra-curricular activities. We have also continued to excel, throughout the year, at competitive events outside school, maintaining our reputation as a side that are disciplined, focussed, skilled, sporting, fair…. and increasingly hard to beat!

PE and Games within the Curriculum

During this academic year, with the exception of Year 2, all teachers have received a minimum of 6 coaching / team teaching sessions from Jess Hookway; a fully qualified PE specialist from St Luke’s School. This has helped to boost both the skills base and confidence of the teachers involved, in delivering a range of games, dance and gymnastics. Long term benefits will begin to emerge during the following academic year, as teachers embrace particular units on the PE long-term plan with a considerably enhanced knowledge of subject pedagogy and delivery.

The 2015/2016 academic year will see Jess Hookway working more closely with Jeanette Bradford, Linda Hale and Alison Long, as each of these three, highly-skilled members of staff are expected to deliver a greater than average amount of PE and Games sessions, to a range of different classes.

During the final weeks of the summer term, linking PE to PSHE, the Exeter Otters Wheelchair Basketball Team will be visiting the school. This aims to raise awareness of disability in sport and is intended to inspire children to reach seemingly impossibly goals. Commitment, drive and resilience are required in abundance if children are to be encouraged to develop into successful sports persons. These skills are fundamental to our PE and Sports programme.

In order to supplement the increasingly rich sporting life of the school, we have also sent ‘stand apart’ pupils in both Key Stages on 6 Gifted and Talented sessions at St Luke’s School: 12 of these children were in Key Stage 1 and 18 were in Key Stage 2

Extra-Curricular Sports Clubs

We have a range of extra-curricular clubs on offer at Alphington Primary School, run either by myself (football and swimming) or external agencies (Premier Sport, Just Dance, Exeter City, St Luke’s etc). These include:

Archery (approximately 12 children in attendance), Dance (29), Netball (20), Gymnastics (150), Futsal (12), Running (18), ECFC Football (16 – predominantly KS1), Year 5/6 Football Club (48), Basketball (14), Swimming (28).

A proportion of our Sport Premium Funding Money has been used to supplement the cost to children of attending clubs which have fees. We will continue to offer this £1 subsidy and I am currently exploring the possibility of an early morning martial arts club. It would also be beneficial to continue to encourage teachers with an interest or expertise in a particular sport to run a club, especially in Key Stage 1.

Sporting Tournaments and Accolades

We aim to compete in as many city-wide competitions as possible – as well as some events that are much further afield. Different children are selected from a range of classes, depending on the skills required, and we aim to provide as many different children as possible with the chance to experience the highs and lows of competitive sport. A taster of the year’s hectic schedule is listed below:

Swimming

  • Competed at National Championships (Millfield School. Somerset)
  • Exeter School’s Gala: obtained 4th place overall (first and second place awarded to schools in the private sector).

NB – since entering into training for the swimming galas, many children have been inspired to take up competitive swimming and some have even joined Exeter City’s swimming squads)

Football

  • Exeter City Football league competition
  • Devon 6-a-side competition
  • Exeter Schools football (finals at St. James’ Park – joint winners)
  • Premier Sport 7-a-side Exeter area winners.
  • Premier Sport Devon Finals.

Tag Rugby

  • Exeter Chiefs World Cup Rugby festival – runners up.
  • 20th Annual ExeterTag Rugby tournament – winners
  • Devon tag rugby finals - 7th place.

Cross-Country Running

  • Cross country at Killerton House: Hannah Rae Y6 individual silver medal; Y4 boys - team event gold medal.
  • Devon Winter Games Exeter Area: representatives - Y4 cross country team.

Other

  • West Exe handball tournament winners.

The Sport Premium money has played a large part in enabling us to take part in these events: paying for transport to and from competitions without the need for parent drivers and contributing towards supply costs for the accompanying teachers (with the exception of swimming galas which are all evening events, and therefore attended out of school staff’s good will).

Towards the Future

We are keen to maintain our reputation as a school renowned for its sport and city / county-wide success. Our Sports Premium money will continue to be directed in the ways detailed above. In addition we are hoping to:

  • Recruit children as young ambassadors, training and supporting the older pupils to run constructive and worthwhile lunchtime activities
  • Replenish resources and equipment in order to ensure that they continue to be of a high quality – and in sufficient quantity – to enable all children within each class to benefit from maximum use.

Many thanks for continuing to support the ongoing work of PE, Games and Sport within this school.
