Seniors are responsible for mailing their own scholarships unless directed otherwise in the George Washington Scholarship newsletter. Scholarship applications that do not have an internet link will be in the scholarship file cabinet in Guidance. Transcript requests for scholarship applications must be submitted on the transcript request form at least one week in advance. Mrs. Melton will provide you with the official transcript to submit with your application.

ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY SCHOLARSHIP

Delta Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated provides need-based scholarships to graduating seniors based on academics and service to community.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

SONY KINGOFF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

In honor of Sonny Kingoff, a longtime supporter of academics and athletics at GWHS, a scholarship opportunity is available to a graduating senior who has participated in varsity sports (including cheerleading).

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Be a graduating senior
  • Have participated in any sport, including varsity cheerleading.
  • Have shown high moral character, have maximized his or her ability in sports endeavors, and have exhibited leadership
  • Have achieved academically to the best of his or her abilities

Award Amount:To be determined (usually in the range of $1,500)

THE BOOKER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Booker Award is granted yearly to two former Glenwood Elementary School students who graduate from the Danville Public High School System. This award is named in memory of Jack and Ilah Tate Booker, who valued education, and in honor of their daughter, Margaret Booker Gabal, a dedicated educator.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Have attended Glenwood for a minimum of three years
  • Have a GPA of 2.0

Award Amount:Two - $2,000 renewable for three additional years

THE ALPHA GAMMA CHAPTER OF THE DELTA GAMMA SOCIETY ANNA DUNEVANT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an organization for key women teachers, provides a $500.00 non-repayable grant-in-aid to award to a deserving female student who is planning to further her education in the area of teaching.

BEACON CREDIT UNION 2016 SCHOLARSHIP

Eligibility: The applicant must:

  • Be a high school graduating member or child of a member of Beacon Credit Union in good standing six months or prior to the deadline for the Beacon Scholarship deadline

  • Have an overall 2.5 GPA

Award Amount:Four scholarships valued at $2,000 each

THE LINKS, INC. DANVILLE CHAPTER MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FOR MINORITY STUDENTS

The Danville Chapter of Links, Inc. offers an annual Merit Scholarships for minority high school seniors.

Eligibility:The student must:

  • Be a minority high school senior
  • Have been or anticipate being accepted into an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Have a 2.5 GPA
  • Plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited four year college or university

The Optimist Club of Danville sponsors an oratorical contest to students in grades 9 to 12. The organization offers $9500 in scholarships to five winners (first to fifth place) in the amounts of $3,000, $2,500, $2,000, $1,000 and $1,000.

VIRGINIA SHERIFF’S INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP

The Virginia Sheriff’s Institute Scholarship program was established to provide an opportunity for young people in Virginia to pursue an educational curriculum in law enforcement or criminal justice. The scholarship is available to students in jurisdictions where sheriffs participate in the scholarship fundraising efforts. Students in this jurisdiction are eligible to receive the scholarship.

Eligibility:The applicant must:

  • Live in a locality where the sheriff is a member of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute and has authorized the Institute to conduct a direct mail special appeal to raise funds for the scholarship program
  • Major in the criminal justice field (those majoring in law or pursuing a career as a lawyer will not be considered as a criminal justice major)
  • Attend a Virginia college

2016 STUDENT-VIEW SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The 2016 Student-View Scholarship program is offering scholarships to high school seniors who plan to attend a four-year college, community/junior college or career school. The program includes:

  • One $4,000.00 scholarship
  • One 1,000.00 scholarship
  • Ten $500.00 scholarship

The Virginia Sports Information Director’s Rich Murray Journalism Scholarship is presented annually to a Virginia high school student who excels in the area of sports journalism and is pursuing a college degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, preferably at an institution in Virginia. WEDNESDAY CLUB MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

The Wednesday Club provides merit scholarships for senior students in Danville and Pittsylvania County public schools.

THE AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY DAN RIVER UNIT 325 SCHOLARSHIP

The American Legion Auxiliary Dan River Unit 325 offers a scholarship to a direct descendant; child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. or a legally adopted child or a child/children of a spouse by prior marriage or dependent as defined by the United States of America Armed Services for Veterans of the United States military and National Guard.

  • Be a citizen of the United States and legal resident of Virginia or North Carolina

PAMPLIN LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Pamplin Leader Award is a one-year merit based $5,000 tuition scholarship presented annually to 40 qualified students from among the Commonwealth of Virginia’s public high schools. The student must apply, receive acceptance, accepts the offer of admission. Recipients of the Pamplin Leader Award must possess a record of outstanding academic achievement that is balanced with a commitment to community service and leadership experience. The Pamplin Leadership Award is open to students applying to majors.

Eligibility: The applicant must:

  • Be a senior enrolled at a Virginia public school planning to attend Virginia Tech
  • Have a 3.8 overall GPA

Award Amount:$5,000

How to Apply:Applications are located in the scholarship file in Guidance or at Do not forward your application to Virginia Tech. You must submit the application to Ms. McKinnie. The GWHS Scholarship Committee will select one application from all applications submitted. Virginia Tech will disqualify your application if you do not follow the application procedures.

Guidance Selected Scholarship: For the three scholarships below complete a Local Universal Scholarship Application found in the scholarship file in Guidance and on the GWHS website.
