Evaluationof resident/rotation:

The residents will be asked to evaluate the rotation and the fellow with whom they spent the most of their time, at the completion of the rotation.

The faculty will evaluate the resident at the completion of the rotation.

Goals of the rotation:

  1. Learn to evaluate and manage patients with different types of rhinitis.
  2. Learn to evaluate and manage patients with asthma with a focus on the new NHLBI asthma management guidelines.
  3. Learn to evaluate and manage patients with urticaria and angioedema, and the potential etiologies for this presentation.
  4. Learn the appropriate use and interpretation of various allergy and immunology laboratory studies, including interpretation of spirometry.
  5. Learn when it is appropriate to evaluate for possible immunodeficiency in patients with recurrent infection and the approach to the diagnostic evaluation.
  6. Learn who is a candidate for allergen immunotherapy and the risks and benefits of this form of therapy.

Teaching Methods:Residents will directly work with both faculty and fellows at various locations. They will attend Journal Club, Practice Parameters Review, Fellows’ Case Conference, and Abbas Immunology Review. They will be provided with a syllabus, which they are expected to complete by the completion of the rotation. They will perform a pre-test and a post-test that will be developed from the Syllabus.

Procedures:Residents will observe performance of skin testing and will be able to interpret results, but will not perform the procedure.

Interpretation of Spirometry results, but will not perform the procedure.
