COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

The summer has passed very quickly but the post and the commander have still been active in the community. The Department Convention was held in June and was attended by the commander and the Chaplain, Ralph Marceau. New Department Officers were installed and there were many classes that were given that were a benefit to anyone seeking to gain more knowledge and understanding of the American Legion.

We had the July 4th Parade down Sunset Strip and our post was represented by members who were able to participate by riding in a truck that was driven and decorated by Helena and Samuel Pantaleo. Later that evening the commander and Chaplain, Ralph Marceau was the Color Guard for the opening of the festivities at the BB&T Center. It was a very rainy start but it did stop in enough time for the opening with only one band canceling. Fireworks followed and there were food trucks, bounce houses and other entertainment for the many people who came out.

The Southern Area Training was held at Post 142 in Pompano Beach and Commander Young and Vice Commander Walter Williams attended along with many other Legionnaires.

Commander Young and Vice Commander Steve Blaustein also participated in the post revitalization that was conducted at Post 222 and gained several members for our upcoming year.

MEMBERSHIP

Our current membership is at 66% which already brings us up to the October membership goal. This past year we reached 90% by the end of the fiscal year. That was short of our 100% that we’ve had for the past several years. Let’s strive for 101% this year and get some of the awards that are being given out at Department for reaching our goal.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

We continue to look for new social activities for our post members. The Water Taxi has group discounts for up and down the Intercoastal Waterway. We will have our Activities Committee work on the details and plan an event that would be suitable for our membership.

POST ACTIVITIES

Members will resume the Social Gathering at Scotto’s Pizza on the Saturday following the General Membership Meeting. Our post is always open to suggestions to have activities that help give the members an opportunity to meet and enjoy some social time that we are not able to have because of the lack of a Post Home/Meeting Hall.

WE NEED EVERYONE’S EMAIL ADDRESS

Cost of mailing is increasing and this will help cut down on postage cost. Hard copy newsletters will be cut to twice a year. The first issue will be sent at the beginning of the fiscal year in September and the second issue in the spring. You can log into: at any time for access to the post newsletter. New Regs Automate Burial Payments for Veterans’ Survivors

On July 7, 2014, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced new burial regulations that allow the VA to automatically pay the maximum amount allowable under law to most eligible surviving spouses more quickly and efficiently, without the need for a written application.

This automation enables VA to pay a non-service connected or service-connected burial allowance to an estimated 62,000 eligible surviving spouses out of a projected 140,000 claimants for burial benefits in 2014. Surviving spouses will be paid upon notice of the Veteran’s death using information already in VA systems. The burial allowance for a non-service connected death is $300, and $2,000 for a death connected to military service.

This revised regulation will further expedite the delivery of these benefits to surviving spouses, reduce the volume of claims requiring manual processing, and potentially make available resources for other activities that benefit Veterans and their survivors.

POST PROGRAMS

JROTC

Our Post continues to support Piper H.S. JROTC Program. They have a new Senior Instructor this year and we will be supporting them with the Jr. Shooting Sports Postal Program and the Year End Awards. They are still working toward getting a trailer for the Cadet equipment by having fund raisers and they are very active in the City of Sunrise with their color guard.

BOYS SCOUTS

We look forward to once again supporting Troop #705 for the 2015 Boy Scouts Skills Competition, Boy Scout Cracker Trailat Camp Tanah Keeta Scout Reservation in Tequesta under the direction of their Scout Leader, Don Vander Linde.

WE NEED EVERYONE’S EMAIL ADDRESS

With the cost of printing and mailing on the rise, we will be limiting our newsletter mail out to twice annually. The first issue will be sent at the beginning of the fiscal year in September and the second will be in the spring. We encourage everyone to go on line to the website:

BIRTHDAYS

Happy Birthday to all members

who will be celebrating a birthday

in the coming months.

FUTURE EVENTS 2015

Due to the holidays in December, we will not be having a General Membership Meeting. Many members are traveling or involved with their families and attending a meeting is not convenient. This advance notice will avoid having to send out a special notice or making calls.

We have had many new members join our post this year and we will once again have the Initiation of New Members at our January General Membership Meeting. Please contact the commander by email or phone to advise that you have not been initiated into Post 365 as a new member so we can prepare for the ceremony.

The post will participate with the City of Sunrise for the Veterans’ Day Program that will be held at the Sunrise Civic Center on November 11th at 9:00 am. We will have a table set up for poppy donations and membership solicitation. We appreciate all of our members who are able to attend and help with the table.

If there are any additional questions regarding post activities or special holiday participation, please contact one of the post officers listed on this page.
