Prep/1/2 News

In our reading workshops this fortnight, the students have begun to use Reading Eggs, a reading programme to supplement our work in the class. We have had a few teething problems but they seem to have been sorted out and they are able to have a session that is free of freezing moments. We have our fingers crossed!!!

The Preps are doing very well with their sounds. Some high frequency words, we will call them the Red Words, are being introduced and they will enable them to start to read some of our decodable books. They are remembering their sounds quickly and blending short cvc words with ease. It is an exciting time for them.

In Mathematics, the Year One and Two students are doing a lot of work on place value at the moment and will continue to do so throughout the year. Although counting is essential, children have a greater use for thinking of numbers in terms of place value ideas: 23 is 2 tens 3 ones. In order to build these concepts, objects first need to be grouped to illustrate the pattern suggested in the place value scheme. They are now using materials which are structured to match the place value demands. Sticks which can be formed into bundles of ten, with ones represented by single sticks, have been proofed to be the most effective means of introducing these ideas to children. Because of this reason the numbers being introduced are the groups of 2-9 tens. Following this, the remaining two-digit numbers greater than twenty will be introduced, again using the bundling material at all times and from there to the language form and finally the recording form eg: two tens three ones, twenty-three and recording in the tens and ones houses.

The Year Two students will be using the MAB materials and will continue to review the two-digit numbers before the hundreds block is introduced.

Please ensure that the Year One and Two students chant their number facts every night. These need to be recalled automatically and at the moment there are too many fingers being used!!!! The number facts are chanted in class but they need more practice.

Our visit to the Life Education Van and Harold was a good experience for all the students. They were a little hesitant at first, but the activities involved them all and their role playing was great.

Until next time,

Ciao, Gail Ducci

Hello everyone. It is scary to think that it is week seven already. In just three weeks we will have completed a quarter of the school year done!

We have been working hard on our persuasive texts; learning how authors influence readers using particular words and phrases. The students seem quite aware of the tricks of advertising. Well done parents!

In history the students are to be assessed on their understanding of early Australia. The unit required the students to construct a historical narrative however, since we have already done this in English for the term, the class has decided that it would be more enjoyable to present their findings as an oral presentation or skit. Groups are rapidly being formed, under guidance, as the students are very excited about this project.

We have been happily graphing in mathematics, as we learn the necessary skills to achieve an effective portrayal of data. This has also assisted us to graph our spelling results throughout the term. We have been looking at how our results change from Monday to Friday and if we have concentrated enough to improve our ability to spell the focus words for the week.

This fortnight we have had a class discussion about bullying and why it is not acceptable to treat others in a nasty way just because they seem different. The main idea of the chat was that every single person is different and deserves respect. The students have responded well to this and are displaying more tolerance and understanding towards their classmates. Our Life Education visit on Wednesday helped reinforce this message as well.

Thank you for considering a book, from our book fair, as an excellent alternative to an Easter egg this year.

Until next time

Well hello everyone and I hope you have had a great fortnight. I can’t believe how quickly the year is going. In the last week we have started reading a class novel for unit 2- Fantasy character development. It is called, “The Forests of Silence” by Emily Rodda. The students are thoroughly enjoying the fantasy genre and are making valuable contributions to all discussions we have regarding the text.At the end of the unit they will produce a description of their own fantasy character to share with their audience.

Maths has focussed on solving word problems using the 4 operations- Monday is an explicit teaching session followed by think/pair and share activities on Tuesday and Wednesday. They are working hard to use strategies taught in class to further develop their own problem solving capacity and the sharing session on a Wednesday focuses on them teaching each other.

In Art we have finished up our Pablo Picassostudy and this week students have discovered Pop Art techniques by Andy Warhol. We will have quite a collection of student pieces by the time the Marburg show arrives.

A reminder that parent teacher interviews are in week 9 this term and a time table will go home next week for parents to choose a suitable time to meet with myself and Mrs Bryant (Thursday/Friday). I hope you all have a great week, until next time.Mrs N
