ALHADEFF FUTURE TEACHERS OF COLOR (AFTOC) PROGRAM

STUDENT AMBASSADOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Position Description:

The Alhadeff Future Teachers of Color (AFTOC) Student Ambassadors are students currently enrolled in the teacher education program in the WSU College of Education. They assist the Faculty Coordinator and the Office of Undergraduate Student Services with student recruitment and retention endeavors. The Ambassadors serve as representatives of the WSU College of Education at public speaking engagements, recruitment and retention events, and in a mentoring capacity. The Ambassadors are also featured on theAFTOC website.

AFTOC Student Ambassador Responsibilities:

Task 1: Creation of programming activities

Description: AFTOC Ambassadors will work together to develop at least one activity per semester related to relevant subject matter formulticultural students interested in teaching.

Objective: Provide informative professional development activities relevant to the educational needs of future teachers. Activities should be both social and educational, and serve as networking opportunities for prospective and current students.

Notes:AFTOChas offered the following programming:

- Mock interviews for program admission

- Guest speaker sessions

- Conferences with multiple workshops related to teacher education

Task 2: Serve in mentoring capacity to incoming AFTOC students

Description: AFTOC Ambassadors will maintain communication with currentundergraduate multicultural students to assist withproviding information about certification into program and inform them of AFTOC sponsored events.

Objective: Providegeneral assistance, guidance and support for peers through consistent communications about the teacher education program, as well as the teaching profession.

Notes:Undergraduate Student Services will provide you with a list of students with whom you must maintaincommunication. We will also provide you with their contact information and a log sheet to document contacts.

Task 3: Serve as COE representative at multicultural recruitment and retention events

Description: AFTOC Ambassadors will participate in at least two multicultural recruitment events each academic year.

Objective: Provide information in regards to the WSU AFTOC Program to prospective and current undergraduate multicultural students. Provide information pertaining to the need for multicultural teachers in the state of Washington as well as the need for teachers in shortage areas.

Notes:Undergraduate Student Serviceswill provide you with a list of events from which you can choose. Events could include CASHE, VIBES, SHAPING, FCOC, Conexion, and the Annual Multicultural Conference Fundraising Dinner. Professional attire required.

Task 4: Conduct monthly meetings of the AFTOC student group

Description: Conduct monthly meetings for students interested in the teacher education program.

Objective: Facilitate regular gatherings for the group. These meetings could consist of discussing and planning future activities.

Notes:These meetings will ideally be scheduled for the same day and time of the month as determined by the group.

**Ambassadors are welcome to participate in as many events as they wish! These activities can be listed on a resume and demonstrate leadership qualities that many employers desire.
