GHS PLATO PROCEDURES 2010 - 2011

PLATO Purpose: The computer-based PLATO Learning Environment will be used at GHS primarily as a credit recovery opportunity for students who have failed a quarter or two, or for students whom have, for whatever reason, missed a portion of a semester of school. PLATO courses are not designed to replace the classroom experience. The PLATO learning lab will be available to students during their study hall (except p. 5) and will be proctored by Lynn Carroll. Guidance will schedule students into the lab. Students will work on specific course modules that have been assigned to them by their teacher. Most PLATO modules begin with a pretest, contain a number of tutorials and activities, and conclude with a posttest. Students must score at least 80% correct on the posttest to move on. The content- area teacher will grade the off-line work.

-  PLATO Eligibility:

o  Student has failed a quarter (limit two quarters/year/subject)

o  Student has been referred by the classroom teacher, IEP team, or RTI team

o  Student has the motivation to work independently and take responsibility for his/her learning.

o  Student demonstrates willingness and ability to take notes during PLATO tutorial sessions.

o  Rare Exception Clause: Any proposed eligibility exception will be discussed with the teacher, the team leader, guidance, special education case manager (when appropriate) and the admin before it is endorsed.

-  PLATO Enrollment Steps:

1)  Students will only qualify for PLATO courses by teacher recommendation, by IEP recommendation, or by RTI recommendation. The IEP & RTI teams must converse with the course teacher before recommendation.

2)  Referring Content Teacher refers student to PLATO using the PLATO Intake Form .The teacher has a conversation with the Team Leader regarding the appropriate available PLATO content (TL have more experience with PLATO content). Please ensure that the Special Education case manager is included when appropriate.

3)  TL gives form to Guidance Counselor. GC meets with the student to review the PLATO Student Contract.

- GC sees if the student has space in his/her schedule for PLATO Lab w/ Lynn Carroll. Every period but 5 is available for PLATO Lab.

4)  Guidance Counselor Gives Student Name & Department PLATO Menu to Barbara Morgan-White to add student to the PLATO class.

5)  Lynn Carroll prints off a weekly progress report for each student and provides to the referring teacher for his/her review.

-  PLATO Grading Process:

1)  Students will earn a “70” for the course work completed through PLATO.

2)  Students must work through the tutorials for assigned modules. They need to take notes as they work through the tutorial. Notes can be reviewed by the content area teacher, Lynn Carrol, the TL, guidance counselor, and/or administration.

3)  Students can only take a test three times (PLATO automatically locks) before they have to go through the Tutorial again. Student should also see teacher for help.

4)  Any off-line work needs to be corrected by the referring content teacher.

5)  Lynn Carroll will provide referring content teacher with final progress report and the referring content teacher will adjust the student quarter grade.
