Algebra 1 Syllabus

We will cover most of the textbook this year. First quarter will cover solving equations (chapters 1 and 2). Second quarter will cover linear equations (chpt 3 – 5).

Third quarter will deal with polynomials (chpt 6 and 7). We will spend 4th quarter working with solving quadratic equations.

Homework: We’ll have homework every day. It will be due the next day. The answers will be on the board as you come in. Correct it yourself. If you got an answer wrong, make sure to write the correct answer down so that you can ask a question about it. Each assignment is worth 5 points: 3 points for having a reasonable answer for every problem, and 2 points for having the question that I pick at random correct. Homework turned in one day late is one point off; 2 days late is 2 points off; any later than that is 5 points off.

Quizzes: We’ll have a quiz every day. All quizzes are open calculator, open notes, and closed book (and closed neighbor).

Tests: There will be a test approximately every 3 weeks. The rules are the same as quizzes. If you are unhappy with your test score, there will be an alternate version of the test available for you to try again. Only the higher score will count. In order to retake a test, you must come in on your own time within a week of taking the first test and you must have your old test (corrected) with you.

Extra Credit: There will be a Problem Of the Week each week. You can also bring in comics that deal with Math. Each comic is worth one point and you can bring in up to five a week. Only the first copy of each comic counts, so check the board before you turn anything in.

Tardies: If you come in after the bell rings, you are tardy. You will lose one point off of the day’s assignment. Once you hit 4 tardies for the quarter, we’ll look at some more consequences.

Grading: Grades will be on a straight percentage basis.

90 – 100% = A;

80 – 89% = B;

70 – 79% = C;

60 – 69% = D.

Quarter grades will be worth 40% of your semester grade, and the semester final will be worth 20%.
