AIREGENERAL REGISTRY

Registration of Italian Citizens Residing Abroad in AIRE (Anagrafe Italiani Residenti all’Estero)

Law no. 470/1988 states that all Italian citizens who intend to live abroad must register at the Italian Consulate within 90 days of arriving in their country of residence.

AIRE registration is necessary in order to obtain any and all documents and certificates issued by the Consulate as well as requests for passport issuance.
Italian citizens should be registered at the Registry of an Italian municipality. Registration permits the exercise of all the rights and duties of an Italian citizen. The Italian citizen is obliged to inform his/her Consulate of all registry data changes (marital status, citizenship, address and family composition).

How to register with the AIRE

Italian citizens requesting registration with the AIRE of an Italian municipality should apply to the Italian Consulate in the place where they reside abroad.

Italian citizens living in:

District of Columbia

Maryland: only Montgomery and Prince GeorgeCounties (all other counties are under the jurisdiction of the Italian Consulate General in Philadelphia)
Virginia: only Arlington and FairfaxCounties (all other counties are under the jurisdiction of the Italian Consulate General in Philadelphia) and the city of Alexandria

must register at the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC with the following documents:

  • valid Italian passport for each family member;
  • proof of legal residence (visa, Permanent Resident Card or US passport);
  • proof of stable residence (driver license, bill of electricity, telephone, etc.).

The registration can bedone in person or sending by mail or by e-mail to "ENROLLMENT FORM" - including the copies of the above documentation.

Changes in AIRE registration data

Italian citizens living outside of Italy are therefore obliged to notify their local Italian Consulate of any change regarding:

  • address abroad;
  • citizenship;
  • marital status;
  • composition of household

Notifying the Consulate of changes regarding registration data allows the Italian Consulates to update the records of the municipality of origin in Italy and to maintain updated records regarding their citizens residing abroad, thus facilitating both the distribution of all services requested in Italy and abroad, as well as communication between the Consulates and Italian citizens living within their jurisdiction.
