COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an aviation history course focusing on the development of flight throughout the centuries. It starts with ancient civilizations, then progresses through time to modern day. The emphasis is on civilian and military contributions to aviation; the development, modernization, and transformation of the Air Force; and a brief astronomy and space exploration history. It is interspersed with concise overviews of the principles of flight to include basic aeronautics, aircraft motion and control, flight power, and rockets. Throughout the course, there are readings, videos, hands- on activities, and in-text and student workbook exercises to guide in the reinforcement of the materials.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Unit 1: Imagining Flight

Chapter 1 - Ancient Flight

Lesson 1 – Discovering Flight:

  1. Know how humans tried to fly in ancient times
  2. Know key aviation devices created during ancient times
  3. Know why machines do not fly the way birds do

Lesson 2 – The Early Days of Flight

  1. Know the developments in lighter-than-air-flight from da Vinci to the wright brothers
  2. Know ways balloons were used during the US Civil War
  3. Know ways the balloon contributed to US victory in the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-America War

Unit 2: Exploring Flight

Chapter 2 – Pioneers of Flight

Lesson 1 – The Wright Brothers

  1. Know how the Wright Brothers succeeded in the first flight
  2. Know the anatomy of the Wright Flyer
  3. Know the principles of airplane flight

Uniform Requirements: All cadets will wear the Air Force blue uniform on designated wear days (usually Wednesday). Criteria for grading is in the KY-941 Cadet Guide.

METHOD of INSTRUCTION:

  1. Reading textbook and learning relevant Vocabulary words.
  2. Lecture, guided discussion, and team activities
  3. Videos supplied by HQ/AFJROTC
  4. Classroom Performance System supplied by HQ/AFJROTC. An interactive teaching device …all students have a personal “clicker” to respond to questions.

AEROSPACE SCIENCE GRADING PROCEDURES:

  1. Textbook/CPS questions: cadets are graded on correct answers per chapter
  2. Quizzes: 100 points (multiple choice, fill in the blank, True/False)
  3. Project: Report on any famous person 100 points
  4. Mid-term exam: 100 points
  5. Final Exam: 100 points
  6. Extra Credit: Crossword puzzles and Word Find exercises.

MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENTS: Cadets returning from an absence are required to present school admittance slip. Cadets may make-up any assignments for full credit if it was an excused absence. Cadets will not receive full credit for work missed during an unexcused absence.
