Botanic Gardens & Centennial Parklands (‘BGCP’) is the operating name used following the operational integration of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust and the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust.

The Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust is responsible for the management and stewardship of the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, the Domain, the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan and the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah.

The Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust is responsible for the long-term strategic planning of the Parklands, as well as the operational day-to-day management of the three parks - Centennial Park, Moore Park and Queens Park.

BGCP aims to minimise our environmental footprint through pollution prevention practices, and be a role model for others to follow. All staff, volunteers, consultants and contractors are required to adhere to our Environmental Policy, Environmental Management System, and comply with relevant environmental legislation, government regulations, policies and agreements.

Primary purpose of the role

Provide support for the development of the BGCP philanthropy strategy under the direction of the Manager, Philanthropy and resulting policy and process. Take principal responsibility for the development and stewardship of a portfolio of donors and stakeholders, deliver outstanding donor cultivation and stewardship, research and identify prospective donors whilst exercising the highest levels of discretion, integrity and professionalism.

Key accountabilities

  • Work with the Manager, Philanthropy to develop BGCP fundraising strategies with regard to Philanthropy, to generate additional income and allow the BGCP to better position itself as an international leader in horticulture, science, conservation, community education and public outreach.
  • Take responsibility for a portfolio of existing and prospective donors with the aim of stewarding existing relationships and generating new philanthropic leads.
  • Manage full cycle of philanthropic support from prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • In conjunction with the Foundation and Friends, and under the direction of the Manager, Philanthropy, develop the bequest program to steward existing bequestors and support the acquisition of new supporters.
  • Principal responsibility for research and identification of prospective philanthropic opportunities including potential benefactors, grants offered through fundraising projects, gifts, bequests, membership uptake and relevant foundations and trusts.
  • Research and develop BGCP policies regarding philanthropic giving.
  • Devise philanthropy events including stewardship and fundraising events; represent BGCP in public relations, marketing and fundraising events to network.
  • Research and draft grant applications, and acquit successful applications in a timely and accurate manner consistent with grant procedures and processes.
  • Ensure financial and legal governance with regard to philanthropic funding is clear and documented, and processes put in place to ensure compliance requirements are met. Ensure financial records are appropriate and timely.

  • Ensure donor relationships are maintained, appropriate levels of stewardship are achieved whilst exercising the highest levels of discretion, integrity and professionalism.
  • Undertake research and report on emerging trends and issues impacting on philanthropic activities and advise the Manager, Philanthropy accordingly to support strategy development and decision making processes

Essential requirements

  • Experience in developing successful relationships with philanthropic donors including soliciting gifts, supporting cultivation and stewardship.
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles and guidelines, relevant legislation and ethical standards.
  • Ability to work after hours, including weekends, as required.
  • Current Australian Driving Licence
  • Satisfactory criminal history check is required.
