After-school sailing 2017

Dear Parents,

Your son or daughter has expressed an interest in joining the after-school sailing or rowing activity this term. This will take place on the following Thursdays:

  • 19 Jan 2-4pm (there will be a bus straight from the inter-house swimming gala in Victoria Park).
  • 9 Feb 2-4pm (this is the Year 10 parents’ consultation afternoon)
  • 23 Feb 4-6pm
  • 2 Mar 4-6pm
  • 9 Mar 4-6pm
  • 16 Mar 4-6pm
  • 23 Mar 4-6pm
  • 30 Mar 4-6pm

If there is a change of dates I will email all students and parents.

The courses will be for beginners and more advanced sailors or rowers. Beginner sailors will hopefully achieve their Hong Kong Sailing Association Level 1 certificate if they attend all sessions. More experienced sailors will work toward Level 2 and higher, and develop their racing skills. They can bring their log books to record hours of sailing towards the higher levels. The sessions will take place at Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Middle Island (opposite the walkway between Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay) and will be run by fully qualified instructors.

Transport:

There will be a bus to Middle Island. It will leave from near the main entrance of the school (there will be a ‘Middle Island’ sign displayed in the windscreen). The bus will leave promptly at 3.20pm. I am afraid that we cannot wait for your son/daughter if they are late, as we must arrive at Middle Island as soon as possible after 3.30pm.

Students will be required to make their own way home. They should finish the activity by 6pm. There is a sampan over to the steps opposite Middle Island, from the top of which they can catch a bus or taxi into town.

Fee / forms:
$2600 for 8 sessions of sailing, $1760 for 8 sessions of rowing.

This covers the hire of facilities, instructors and transport. Please make your cheque payable to Island School. Please complete the attached indemnity form, as your son/daughter will not be able to sail or row until this is done.

Your child must hand the cheque and indemnity form to Sasha in the general office by Friday 13th January. There is a first-come, first-served system for filling the places.

Safety:

Each club employs fully qualified instructors, aided by assistant instructors, and strict safety guidelines are adhered to. There will always be at least one Island School staff member present. I will be at nearly every session; my mobile number is 91043015.

Your child must be able to swim competently to take part.

Equipment/clothing:

  • Swimming costume
  • Rash vest / t-shirt
  • Waterproof jacket or wetsuit top (it can get cold in winter)
  • A beanie (woolly hat)
  • Sun hat and sun cream
  • Suitable footwear (water shoes, old trainers – NOT flip-flops/thongs)
  • Towel (hot showers at both clubs)

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further queries.

Yours faithfully,

Julian Reed
