Act 3: Plot
Scene 1:
After King Lear was betrayed by his daughters and went into the storm, Kent was informed by a Gentleman were the King and fool were. When they encountered Kent informs the Gentleman that French were prepared to get into England and Kent gives him a purse and ring so that he could send him to Cordelia and she would believe what the Gentleman was telling her.
Scene 2:
King Lear shows his angriness towards her daughters and does not want to return to their palaces for lodging, while the food was freezing and plead the King to go to his daughters because they needed shelter. Fortunately for them Kent founds them and he takes them to a dwelling, for them to stay there.
Scene 3
Gloucester communicates his bastard son that he desired to go and help King Lear, but before that he needed to give him a letter about the future invasion from French people. Gloucester instructs him to say nothing about it, but he apparently is going to disobey him and betray him.
Scene 4
After Kent’s arrival, King Lear and the fool finally get to the hovel. In the hovel a “ghost” scares the Fool, but it was just Old Tom (Gloucester’s son, Edgar as a madman-beggar). King Lear and Old Tom share their feelings of sadness and angriness and realize that they’ve been treated the same by their family members. Meanwhile Gloucester arrives and takes them to a better place for shelter.
Scene 5
Edmund reports to Cornwall the letter that Gloucester had given him to keep. He also interprets his father as a traitor for helping King Lear to hide that letter in which it was stated that French were going to attack. In reward for this Cornwall accolades him by making him an earl of Gloucester.
Scene 6
King Lear demonstrates that he is apparently having a lunatic personality because he portrays the Fool, Edgar and Kent as if they were Goneril and Regan in a trial. Gloucester has received recent news, that they were searching for King Lear to kill him, so he wanted Kent to take Lear in a hurry to Cordelia’s place.
Scene 7
Because of Edmund’s cunning plan, now Cornwall sends men to find him and bring him back. Cornwall also sends Edmund and Goneril to inform Albany about the French forces that would arrive. When they bring Gloucester to Cornwall, he leaves him blind by taking his eyes, but during taking Gloucester’s eyes a servant that was trying to protect Gloucester, leaves him wounded.
