AFC Lightning College Recruiting - Sample College Letter

Summary:
Listed below are some helpful tips and reminders for when writing a letter to college coaches. A sample letter is also below for your use (it needs to be edited).

Email is great way to start the communication process between you and a college. But, this shouldn’t be the only form of communication.

And, don’t forget to ask for help before sending out the email. Let your head coach and DOC (Director of Coaching) read a draft email before you send it out.

Helpful Tips/Reminders:

-First impressions are important — get it right the first time.

- Triple-check everything -- names/emails/spelling/grammar. No text lingo.

- Ask your head coach and DOC for help.

- ALWAYS copy your head coach on the emails -- your coach can't help if they don't know about it.
And, depending on your high school year, coaches can't email youback right now.

- Quadruple check everything.

- Keep a log of who you sent to and when you sent it.

- Make sure you have the right names with the right schools -- don't send an email to the Ohio State coach and let them know you are interested in Michigan (as an example).THIS IS A BIG MISTAKE AND A COMMON ONE BECAUSE PEOPLE COPY AND PASTE!

- Coach email addresses are available on the athletic department website -- either on the coach/ roster page for the team or the staff directory.

- Send your head coach (and DOCs too if you want) a draft letter before you send it out.

- The player should send it, not the parents.

- It should come from the player’s email address, not the parents. Your email address should be appropriate and not crazy.
