Opportunity: Geologists Needed for Education Outreach in Webster Groves

There are six elementary schools in the Webster Groves School District. During this upcoming school year the fourth-graders there are studying the major Earth processes, such as erosion, earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, tsunamis, etc. One of their assignments will be to design an engineering project that will withstand one of these processes that they select. This assignment is ambitious to say the least!

The Webster Groves teachers would like to arrange for geologists to visit these students at the six schools at different times during the school year. For example, at Avery Elementary School, the geologist’s visit would probably be in early November. At Hudson Elementary, the visit probably would be in April 2018. Other teachers in other Webster Groves schools may prefer other times during the school year.

Arrangements and schedules will be coordinated directly by Kim Fitzgerald, Fourth Grade Teacher at Avery Elementary School ( or 314-963-6425, ext. 15205). Ideally, there will be enough geologists so that each volunteer will visit just one school.

Advocacy for the geosciences is a responsibility of active professionals: this includes being a resource to all levels of education. (And fourth-graders are a hoot!) If at all possible, please contact Kim and offer your expertise. Many thanks!

AEG St. Louis Chapter Sponsors Needed

The AEG St. Louis Chapter is looking for sponsors for our Winter 2017-2018 meetings. Sponsorships are $300 per meeting. Please contact Jon Truesdale for more information ()

Benefits of being a Meeting Sponsor include: a 20-30 word summary in the newsletter, one or two PowerPoint slides to run on the slide-show loop that is projected in the dining room during the networking and dinner time, and if a representative of the sponsoring company attends the meeting, he or she will have two to three minutes to talk about their organization. Brochures, giveaways, table-top displays, and business cards are certainly welcome as well.
