Advisory Committee Role

The Breakthrough Manchester Advisory Board consists of 6-10 members who support the dual mission of Breakthrough Manchester and are committed to its programmatic and financial success and sustainability. Advisory Board members cultivate effective relationships with stakeholder groups, maintain a singular focus on the program’s mission and serve as Breakthrough ambassadors to the education, business, philanthropic and client communities. Advisory Board members are expected to contribute financial support to the program on an annual basis to the best of their ability, and to encourage others to do the same.

The Advisory Board Member understands the relationship between the Derryfield School and Breakthrough but is not de factoa member of the Derryfield Board of Trustees, has no voting authority on the Board and does not havethe legal and fiduciary responsibilities typical of Trustees. The focus of the Advisory Board is narrowly on Breakthrough Manchester and broadly on its impact and future.

Key Responsibilities

•Become familiar with, and remain knowledgeable about,Breakthrough Manchester’s mission, history, programs, budget and policies

•Act as an ambassador for Breakthrough when the situation allows, and educate others in the community about the program’s dual mission and successes

•Support the program financially to the best of your ability and encourage others to do the same

•Offer your educated opinion on key matters facing the program. Stay informed of all sides of the issues so that your perspective is well rounded.

•Lend your name and reputation to Breakthrough to enhance its credibility.

•Attend outside meetings as invited by Breakthrough to stay well informed and to connect Breakthrough as appropriate with new opportunities.

•Agree to a one-year term with the option of renewal for two consecutive terms (up to three years total).

Time Commitment

  • Four meetings per year- October, December, February and May.
  • Visits Breakthrough one day during the summer session, and invites others to do the same.
  • Offers advice occasionally between meetings via email or phone.

Qualifications

Advisory Committee members:

  1. have demonstrated interest and support for Breakthrough Manchester’s dual mission,
  2. can leverage credibility and connections based on their experience and reputation in their respective communities
  3. are connected with one or more Breakthrough Manchester stakeholder groups;
  4. the Manchester and New Hampshire school systems,
  5. higher education,
  6. the business community,
  7. the client community,
  8. the Derryfield School,
  9. philanthropy, and/or
  10. educational equity and social justice organizations
  11. commit to make and/or solicit contributions to Breakthrough annually
