INFORMATION FOR ADVISORS

OF INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH HIGH DEGREE STUDENTS – Visa requirements and Fee Liabilities

International students on a student visa are required to maintain – at the institution for which their student visa was issued –

  • full time enrolment,
  • “internal” attendance (in practice, reside no more than 250 km from their UQ location),
  • up-to-date contact details (address, telephone, and email) in Australia, and
  • satisfactory academic progress.

An International student on a student visa who is unable to maintain full-time study for whatever reason is required to leave Australia. Withdrawal, interruption of candidature, and suspension of scholarships must be requested (form on Graduate School website).

Contact Ms Monica Turvey, Manager of International Admissions, if an international student for whom you are an advisor:

  1. has had no contact with the advisory team for several weeks and you do not know their whereabouts;
  2. plans to study or research more than 250 km from their principal place of UQ study for more than 3 months:
  3. outside Australia. Approval must be obtained before leaving Australia or the visa may be cancelled, making it difficult for the student to re-enter Australia.
  4. in Australia (including at another Australian university or research institution). IED must be formally advised in writing before firm travel arrangements are made.
  5. becomes a Permanent Resident.
  6. becomes ill and cannot continue to study full time.

If the expected date for submission of their thesis changes, an International Student will require a visa extension and/or may be liable for additional Tuition Fees. Theses submitted to the Office after the Census Dates are required to pay fees for that semester.

After thesis submission, students would normally be required to leave Australia within 4-8 weeks. If they wish to stay at UQ – to write papers, await examiners’ reports, and make corrections – a visa extension can be granted for 3 months (with possible renewal for a second 3 months).

Dates of arrival, interruption and departure of International students may impact on their fee liabilities. Students who:

  1. are enrolled on any date between 1 April and 1 May (Semester 1) or between 1 September and 30 November (Semester 2) pay full tuition fees for that semester;
  2. commence in May-June or in October-November, pay 50% fees for that semester.
  3. commence after 1 December (semester 2) and 1 July (semester 1) are not charged fees for that semester.
