Project Guidelines

Spring 2017 – Brother Spaeth

Each student will translate 1 John 1:1-10. This project is worth 10% of your final grade. In order to receive full credit, the student must include the following with their project:

  1. Translation of 1 John 1:1-10 – Due by class time according to the schedule below.
  2. Diagram or write out the Greek text
  3. Parse all verbs, Infinitives, and Participles
  4. Identifythe gender, number, and case of all nouns, pronouns, and adjectives.
  5. Write out the English translation
  6. Identify any significant grammatical constructions
  7. Identify and study three (3) key words in the passage that need special attention.
  8. Look up the word in Thayer’s Greek Lexicon to discover the word’s range of meaning.
  9. Identify all possible meanings of the word
  10. List John’s use of the word in his epistle
  11. List John’s use of the word in his gospel
  12. List the various ways the word is translated in the New Testament.

This project is to be completed with only the use of the Greek text, Thayer’s Greek Lexicon, and the website as specified below.

  • Use only Thayer’s Greek Lexicon and your textbook for looking up words.
  • Do Not use a computer on this project, except where noted.
  • Do Not use an analytical lexicon.
  • Do Not use your English Bible!
  • Do Not fall behind in your work.
  • Do your own work. (This is not a group project)

"to make visible, clear, manifest," known (akin to A, No. 2), is used especially in the writings of the Apostles John and Paul, 9 times in the Gospel, 9 times in 1 John, 2 in Rev.; in the Pauline Epistles (including Heb.) 24 times; in the other Gospels, only in Mark, 3 times; elsewhere in 1Pe 1:20; 5:4. The true meaning is "to uncover, lay bare, reveal."

6 ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι κοινωνίαν ἔχομεν μετʼ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐν τῷ σκότει περιπατῶμεν, ψευδόμεθα, καὶ οὐ ποιοῦμεν τὴν ἀλήθειαν·

7 ἐὰν δὲ ἐν τῷ φωτὶ περιπατῶμεν, ὡς αὐτός ἐστιν ἐν τῷ φωτί, κοινωνίαν ἔχομεν μετʼ ἀλλήλων, καὶ τὸ αἷμα Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ καθαρίζει ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἁμαρτίας.

8 ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ ἔχομεν, ἑαυτοὺς πλανῶμεν, καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν.

9 ἐὰν ὁμολογῶμεν τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν, πιστός ἐστι καὶ δίκαιος ἵνα ἀφῇ ἡμῖν τὰς ἁμαρτίας, καὶ καθαρίσῃ ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἀδικίας.

10 ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι οὐχ ἡμαρτήκαμεν, ψεύστην ποιοῦμεν αὐτὸν, καὶ ὁ λόγος αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν.
