  1. Examine the magazines and/or advertisements your group has brought to class.
  2. What do you notice about the ads?
  3. What ideas, beliefs, values do they represent?
  4. What commonalities do they share?
  1. Choose a topic for your group to focus on. Sample topics:
  • portrayal of women in advertising
  • portrayal of men in advertising
  • portrayal of romantic relationships in advertising
  • portrayal of minorities in advertising
  • violence in advertising
  • humor in advertising
  1. Once you have your topic, review your ads. What do your ads suggest about this topic? Come up with a thesis about your topic. For example, if we chose humor as our topic, we would have to consider what is funny about ads. In the Super Bowl commercials, we noticed that much of the humor comes from violence. Therefore, a thesis statement might be: American advertising often suggests that physical violence is humorous.
  1. Find 5-10 ads that support your thesis. If you cannot find at least five ads to support your thesis, chances are, it’s not a good one, and you may want to switch your topic or revise it.
  1. For each supporting ad, write a short paragraph explaining how it supports your thesis. Sample paragraph:

  1. Put your ads and paragraphs together in a Power Point or Prezi to present your findings to the class.
