Advert for Trainee Creative Producers

The Stove Network is looking for two people under 25 to join the team that will produce the Nithraid tfestival on/by the River Nith in Dumfries. This is a brilliant opportunity to grow your skills and experience by joining an experienced creative team, play a very real part in shaping a public event and get paid into the bargain! The two roles we are looking to fill are:

  1. Trainee Event Producer – involving a blend of: marketing, creative event planning and event coordination.
  2. Site Production Assistant – involving a blend of: hands-on making (joinery etc.), working on the river, assisting with coordination and running of a boat race.

Nithraid is a unique public event in the Dumfries calendar. Now in its 4th year, it is comprised of a sailing race between the Solway Coast and the centre of Dumfries (made possible by a very high tide). A ‘festival village’ on the river bank in the town centre marks the finish line. The village contains a local producers market, acoustic music and live artworks. The Nithraid is symbolised by the Salty Cow that is paraded through the town before being released into the river at the finish of the race.

Time Commitment

Each of the two roles will span from late June / early July to 9th September (Nithraid takes place on 3rd September). There are no set hours for the role – applicants will need to be flexible and fit their commitment around the demands of the project (expect a steady rise in hours worked towards the week before the event – this last week will be properly full-time).

Payment

Each Trainee Creative Producer will be paid a fee of £1,500 for their time working on the project. In addition, some travel expenses are available.

1. Trainee Event Producer

Personal Specification: You will be someone who is interested in a career working in arts/festivals. You will be a natural communicator and team worker. You will have solid IT skills including Excel, Word, Email, Social Media and ideally some design-based software (e.g. Photoshop). You may have a grasp of basic marketing techniques – but this is less important than an intuitive understanding of the need to communicate Nithraid to the public and a creative approach to this task. You will be a creative problem-solver and unafraid to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into anything that needs doing. You will have a natural flair for people and events and will want to contribute your own ideas to making Nithraid truly awesome.

2. Site Production Assistant

Personal Specification: You will be someone with a ‘can-do’ attitude, with basic joinery skills, someone who enjoys solving problems and enjoys learning. You will enjoy working outside and be confident with your own personal safety around water. You will be resourceful, practical and creative in your approach. Your places of work for the project will be: Dumfries Town Centre (Stove and River Nith), Kingholm Quay and a Workshop near Auldgirth – being able to drive and/or make your own way between these locations will be a big advantage.
