Motor Skill Competence – Skill Cues, Tactics, or Performance Outcomes (Perf. Out)Perf. Out
(Weight) / Advanced (4) / Proficient (3) / Basic (2) / Below Basic (0)
Performance Outcome-Fluidity
[1] / The skill is performed in an “automatic or fluid” manner. / Skill is more “mechanical” but still effective. / Periodic stops and starts when not necessary. / Jerky, unbalanced, unsure about skill being performed.
Performance Outcome-Focal Point
[1] / Belayer does not look at the belay hands or system and concentrates on the climber throughout the performance of the skill. / Belayer occasionally looks at hands or system and does not break concentration on climber / Belayer looks away from climber at system or any point and loses concentration on the climber
Performance Outcome-Hand Placement[1] / Two hands never hold the belay rope. The dominant hand never releases the belay rope. / Dominant hand never releases belay rope although other hand may come into contact with rope without losing control of the break side of the belay. / Any violation of the two mentioned condition in the advanced column.
Performance Outcome-Technique
[1] / The techniques of pull, brake, re-grasp and slide are correctly incorporated throughout. / Some extra slack enters the system without endangering the climber. / Excessive slack, difficulty pulling rope through, reaches too far when re-grasping or reaches below break hand / Uses “slip-slap-slide” technique, not able to do any portion effectively (pull, brake, re-grasp or slide) so as to temporarily stop belaying.
Performance Outcome-Rope in Relation to Climber
[1] / The belay rope always safely follows the climber and stays in a support position up from the harness. / Belay rope has some slack and would potentially be a short fall if the climber slipped. / Belay rope hangs down from the climber and is not in a position to protect against a fall that would be jarring. / Belay rope is not brought up at all with the climber or entangles the climber as they ascend.
Performance Outcome-
Effective Communication
[1] / Communication is effective in the beginning, during, and after the climb using correct belay commands and procedural commands so the climber and the rope are in synchronization / Communication includes correct belay commands and some procedural commands to keep the climber and the rope in synchronization / Communication includes correct belay commands but the procedural commands do not coordinate the movement of the climber and the rope / Communication is not effective or absent before, during and after the climb
Performance Outcome – Descentfrom climb [1] / The descent is slow, controlled, consistent and smooth. The belayer has one hand on the brake side of the belay device. / The descent is controlled but there are variations in speed. / Belayer “feeds” rope into the belay device, brake hand is positioned too close to belay device. / The descent is too fast, choppy or entirely stops. Climber falls for brief period.
