APUSH REQUIREMENTS and IMPORTANT INFORMATION

College-Level Course and AP Test Information

  1. I must reiterate this point. You can earn 4 credits from DMACC each semester for this course. As an adjunct DMACC instructor, I must fulfill DMACC requirements. In other words, this course will take dedication, focus and the ability to read vast amounts of information succinctly. Make sure taking this course is the right decision for you.
  2. In addition to DMACC requirements, I must also fulfill College Board (the entity that writes the AP test) requirements. You will be prepared to take the AP test in May. Taking the AP test is not a requirement, but it is an expectation. Please keep this in mind as we progress through the course.
  3. The APUSH Test is Friday, May 5, 2017!!!!

Binder Requirement

  1. You will need to purchase a 3 ring binders for this course—at least 1 1/2 ” please.All papers need to be kept in this binder. You must have 9 tabbed dividers in this binder-label them Period 1 1491-1607 etc. according to the historical periods-the list is online too.
  2. The binder is due by Monday, August 29/Tuesday, Aug. 30
  3. You are expected to keep this in good order, and bring it to class each day—it is probably the BEST and EASIEST way to help you in this course.

Chapter Notes

  1. For each chapter, you will complete Cornell notes. The structure of the notes must be in Cornell style with chapter title, # at the top, questions in the margins, notes in the middle and a summary at the end. I will NOT accept any other format of notes.
  2. These chapter notes are typically due on MONDAYS/TUESDAYS-see your syllabus for the chapter that is due that week.
  3. You will keep these notes in your 3 ring binder in chronological order-they will help you prepare for the AP test. Make sure they are labeled with chapter title, number and page numbers.
  4. Notes are worth 5 points-missing a couple won’t seriously harm your grade, but it is not advised. Many times I have seen a grade come down to 5 or 10 points and the notes would have helped them. Also, not reading an entire chapter in the text will prevent you from scoring well on the AP exam.

Chapter Presentations

  1. Beginning with Chapter 3, one pair will complete a chapter lesson plan. The chapters will be selected the first full week of school.
  2. The rubric is located on our classroom website under “Chapter Lesson Plan.” You must print off a rubric AND print off/complete chapter lesson template!
  3. The key is for you to TEACH your fellow classmates about the chapter information. Teaching is the best way to learn and understand!

Identification Terms (ID) Quizzes

  1. You will have 7 ID quizzes throughout the year—the due dates are on your syllabus! The terms areposted on our classroom website under “terms.”
  2. The quiz dates are listed on your syllabus! Put these into your planner! They are matching style quizzes. You should know “who, what, when, where and significance” for each term.
  3. I suggest purchasing a spiral bound index card set to keep all the terms organized or typing all of them up to save—they will help you on the AP test!!!!

Class Rules/Expectations

  1. This is a college course and you will be treated as such so come to class prepared: binder, pens, pencils and paper. Be on time and be respectful.
  2. No cell phones allowed on the desks, in your laps or anywhere that I can hear or see them! They will be placed in a bin at the beginning of class.
  3. Food and drink permitted with approval; water is always okay.
  4. EMAIL ME for your absent work; avoid having your parents do this. Be responsible!
  5. LATE WORK POLICY: You get one “freebie” per unit-see syllabus for units. After that, you can turn in late work (for reduced credit at the discretion of the teacher) by the end of the unit. I will NOT accept late work for a unit after the unit is finished. You must write “late” at the top of the assignment and put it in the late tray. All assignments will be marked “IN” the day due in IC so you will constantly know if anything is missing.
  6. COMMUNICATE! If you have a question about your grade or pretty much anything, EMAIL ME or SEE ME personally. I am here to teach and guide you so please help me do that by asking questions or notifying me of concerns you have. I understand life gets busy and sometimes stressful, so talk to me about this. My door is always open and my ear is always listening!

Grading Scale: This is the first year this class will be on SRG and CA’s scale is TBD.

A=100-87.5%

B=87.4-77.5%

C=77.4-67.5%

D=67.4-60%

F=59.99 and below
