ADVANCED TV SPOT PROJECT:15
____1. Individual Project: Each student must write, produce, film (video record) andedit one spot. However,team
members may appear in each others’ spots, andmay help in other ways.
____2. Project Choice: You may choose one of the spot categories, but it must be approved. Once we haveenough of one
category, then that category will be closed and all other students will have to pick a different category. Choose your own topic
to fit the spot category, but we must avoid duplicates. All choices and planned techniques must be pre-approved.
____3. SPOT CATEGORIES:
107.9—FM Station Spot: Focus on one aspect of the station; “sell” the station; get people to want to tune in.
School PSA (message): Focus on the topic assigned by the teacher; “sell” that message;
School or Community PSA (organization): Focus on a school or community organization (get approved ahead of
time); “sell” that organization;
School PSA (School Spirit): “Sell” Pirate Pride or Knight Pride. It can be about sports but may also be about
other school spirit concepts. Check with the teacher for possible required slogans.
____4. Actual spot requirements: Each spot will be taped using a hand-held camcorder and must be edited. All work
must be produced in a digital format, including the final, edited spot.
TIMING: All spots must be EXACTLY 30 SECONDS.
FORMAT: All spots may only include: video, instrumental music bed, voice-over (one announcer voice) and superimposed graphic(s). (Include 15 seconds of black before and after the spot.)
BANNER (SLOGAN): Each spot must end with banner/slogan designated by the teacher.
CONSENT: Anyone (adults and minors) appearing in the spot must sign a consent form / release.
MUSIC: must berights-free.
ADOBE AUDITION: will be used to mix and edit all sound (rights-free music and voice-over) and then dubbed to the video editor. Try to keep it all in a digital format.
FILM SCHOOL TYPE CAMERA SHOTS: Use correct shot framing. Apply learned composition tips.
Graphics: Check with teacher for specific requirements, including font, color, etc.
EFFORT and PRIDE: Your spot must be the product of extreme effort in paperwork and production.
PROFESSIONALISM: Your spot will NOT be accepted unless it demonstrates professionalism and high standards for content, for sound and for video production.
HIGH ROAD:Your spot must be totally high road and very representative of the ideals of the broadcasting program. Show intelligence, class and total appropriateness.
____5. PROCESS / Evaluation Checkpoints:You must get mentor approval for each step before moving to the next.
Step 1: “PITCH”:(no template)3-sentence typed proposal specifically describing what you will do and how you will do it. Get approval and discuss the project with the teacher and/or mentor. E-mail the pitch.
Step 2: PAPERWORK: 1. Typed script (Use TV script template at teacher web site); 2. detailed storyboard (print sheets from teacher web site); 3. shot list (no template) Show the storyboard. Print & digitally hand in all other paperwork.
Step 3: FOOTAGE (B-Roll) and all other visuals (graphics, etc.)
Step 4: CONSENT / RELEASE FORMS: (download from teacher web site). Must be signed by all minors (requires parent signature, too) and adults who appear in your video. Get these signed BEFORE you film. Show the teacher or your mentor as soon as they are done.
Step 4: SOUND: Voiceover and / or edited Rights-Free MUSIC: Get approval from teacher and/or mentor once it is on the video editor.
Step 5: ROUGH EDITED SPOT: Get feedback from your designated mentor. Revise until you get approval to finalize.
Step 6: FINAL EDITED SPOT and FINAL PAPERWORK PACKET:
Note: Your final TV Spot must reflect the info from the top 10 spot tips, the top 10 video composition tips and other TV instruction.
Hand in final SPOT (follow current hand in procedures) & Paperwork: digital & printed (IN-Baskets)
