HELP AND SAFETY UNDER ONE ROOF

INFORMATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

You are at the MDCK Kennemerland because people are worried about you.
They think that you are experiencing bad things, or that you are not being cared for properly. They think that you are perhaps being abused or that someone is doing things to you that you don’t want.

What does the MDCK do?

We find out what you have been through and then do something about it. This is why we want to talk to you and hear your story. So that we can make a plan of how to best help you and your family. We make that plan with you.

We do this because things need to become safe for you again.

How do we do this?

In the Multidisciplinair Centrum KindermishandelingKennemerland (Kennemerland Multidisciplinary Centre for Child Abuse) someone will talk to you, someone who will stay with you while you are at the MDCK. You can tell him or her everything. Together, you will talk to a number of people. Sometimes you will be examined, and sometimes you will just talk. For example, you talk to a doctor, who will examine you, or with a support worker or a police officer. Other people talk to your parents or with the people that take care of you.

All of this happens in one place, at the MDCK Kennemerland. So you don’t have to keep going to different places and you don’t have to keep retelling your story.

Your story is safe with us

You can tell us everything. We won’t share what you tell us with someone else. But sometimes it’s necessary, for your safety, to talk with other people about you. If we do this we will always discuss this with you first.

What does the investigation involve?

Firstly, parents and child(ren) talk with a member of staff about the referral to the MDCK and about what is going to happen in the centre.

Then the parents fill in questionnaires that provide information about the developmentof the child and how they think that the child is feeling now. The child is also sometimes asked to complete a questionnaire about how they feel and about their concerns.

Physical examination by specialists from the hospital can also be part of the investigation. Following consultation with the parents, the MDCK will request, if necessary, the family doctor, school or other instances to provide supplementary information.
